USB Andretti Wheel

by A. Markham *Kart44 » Fri, 11 Jun 1999 04:00:00

Guys,
This is my experiance with the new Mad Catz Andretti Wheel. I have used
a T2 wheel for 3 years now and I finally said "screw it" I'm tired of this
junk breaking. So, I went to my local Babbages store and picked up this new
wheel. Well, the wheel looks GREAT! The buttons are in the right place and
the tension in the steering wheel is very realistic feeling. The clamping
system is nice but I prefer the old T2 style. Here comes the killer. The
pedals SUCK!!! They stay in place on my carpeted floor but you have to raise
your leg up to press them down. I like the old T2 way of just having to
pivot your ankle to accelerate and brake but the Andretti wheel doesn't come
close. I played with it for about an hour chunked it back in the box and
sent it back. Man, I wish I could use the T2 pedals with the Andretti wheel.

Thanks,
Aaron Markham *Kart44*

Aaron's right -- not about the fact that the pedals suck (I don't
think they do, personally), but, rather, about the fact that you do
have to raise your foot/leg to operate the pedals.  As I said in my
review, you can't just pivot your foot on the heel with these pedals,
but it's not much different than it is in a real car (a bit MORE
realistic in some ways, actually). Aaron's opinion is right for him,
obviously, but although I found the pedals difficult to adapt to at
first, after I "learned" how to use them, I found them to be very easy
to use.  When I went back to my TSW2 pedals (or the ACT Labs pedals),
I had to "re-learn" how to use them all over again.  Again, this is a
learning curve issue, I think, but when it comes to things like this,
everybody's opinion is right.

USB Andretti Wheel

Thanks for everyone's responses to my posting. It's good to know that I
can use my NASCAR99 with the Andretti wheel, should I ever decide to get
it, but there is still life in my T2 so I will stick with it rather than
have to deal with the pedal geometry change. I guess I am lucky as my T2
was a later model and I understand that the springs in the pedals were
beefed up. So far (knock on simulated wood grain desk top) I have not
had the spring breakage problem so many have reported in the past.

With regards to the comment about how lifting your foot off the floor to
push the pedals is more like real life... my feet are so big that I rest
my heel on the floor mat all the time when I drive and just pivot the
ankle joint. All my shoes have this worn spot in the back of the right
heel, drives my wife nuts ;-)
