The following statement was part of the post-race report for Monza
(Season 2, Event 1):

"A couple of laps later, Richard Busch pegs the dumb-o-meter and
tries to pass Piotr Tysowski AFTER entering the Parabolica..."

yeh but the post race report for IGPS1 Watkins Glen is unrepeatable even on a
liberal newsgroup like RAS...

(Our illustrious race admin is taken out by a back marker out-braking himself in
the closing stages from third place)

Geez I remember this like yesterday - was it really 1999?

Come on John  - forget that Redneck ***and fire up IGPS4 !!

Italians need not apply :-)

LOL - I gotta go back and read that one... :)

I still have the IGPS/1 CD, and could even make an IGPS/2 CD that I
promised everyone. :)

When I want to re-live some fond mempoories, I go back through the
progression of race reports and emails. God that was the most fun I
think I've ever had.

An application I received for IGPS/1:

I would be interested in racing, assuming you would consider a 56k
connection from the UK (I stay up late!)

   Name Tony Rickard

   Race name T Rickard

Chassis  Brabham, Murasama, BRM  (i.e. whats left!!)

   See ya on VROC sometime

:)

IGPS - Moment in History

I just realized something...

We have a group of legends that all pretty much began their GPL racing
careers in IGPS...

ZZ Bush
Tony Rickard
Graeme Nash
Piotr Tysowski
Paul Godfrey (good in anything with at least 3 wheels)
Markus Steipel (god he was fast)
Bo Bruce
Steve Sparks
Bill Cranston
Tim Wheatley
Jack Rambo (famous AND notorious)

Wowsers...

I beat almost of all those guys in my first race;-)  I still remember you
saying something like; I knew you were trouble since I didn't like your
first name. IGPS was more about friends racing than racing alone, I had some
difficulty understanding that in the beginning. But Tony helped me out.
Unfortunately for me I need my sleep badly and wasn't able to make it to the
races most of the time just because I slept through my alarm.

Harjan, you (and Matteo) were legends before you got into IGPS.  But
now, I'm going to have to go back and see what I could possible have
meant (and if I even really said that I didn't like your first name).
I'll get back to you though.

I checked all the email from Season 1 and Season 2 - I didn't find
anything about telling you that I didn't like your name.  I did see a
lot of emails concerning connection problems, and there were a few times
that you weren't happy with my penatly awards.

If I did indeed say something to that effect, I'm almost sure that I was
either joking with you or being sarcastic about something.

Oh it's no problem John, in a way you were right.

It was the first race in which I participated (Kyalami), I had done a lot of
practise after seeing the times Tony, you and Nash could put in. So at the
start I was quite nervous, I remember Graeme having a connection problem
right at the start. I believe I was leading after the first lap (I'll check
the season review cd just now to bring my memory back up to date) having
quite a gap towards the guys behind me, I immediately decided on saving the
engine, short shifting a bit. I was quite cautious overtaking the back
markers, until the lap that would bring me into trouble the next couple of
days. I was right behind ZZ, who in my view was racing my too much for a
backmarker. At one point I was having to outbrake him at the end of the long
straight, he made it quite hard and I decided to tuck my nose back under his
gearbox. A few corners later he made a mistake going into one of the corners
and I ran softly into him. I was so pissed off at the time, even while I did
win the race I started a discussion that later inspired you to never again
allow 'racing discussions' over the mailing list.

Tony pointed out to me that the league wasn't all about racing, being the
quickest. You really were a bunch of friends. From that moment I became a
bit less focussed on the results. However as said before I participated in
far too little races to consider myself an IGPS driver.

BTW Tony, when GP4 is out, I would love to check each others replays again
like we did when GP3 came out.

Scary - I've raced against most of these guys in the Screamers and CORS
leagues...and was just another backmarker... :(

If you participated in even one race, you were a member of the family.
I never had a problem with anyone really, except for Matteo, and believe
it or not, I don't hold anything that transpired against him.  that was
then, this is now. :)

However, by sending his emails, he has implicitly agreed to being the
***of many IGPS-related jokes (I hope he doesn't mind).

The important thing is that we all had fun, and as far as I know, we
have all remained friends (or at least fond acquaintances).  that's what
made IGPS so special.  I *still* display my trophy from IGPS/2, and have
roped many an unwilling audiences into watching a replay or two from
both IGPS/1 and IGPS/2.  I'm extremely proud of what we ALL accomplished
during those two seasons, and would gladly swap paint with any of you
anytime.

Hi Harjan,

Just to put the record straight it wasn't ZZ but a BRM (no names!)

I got dq'd in qualifying after tangling with Karissa (ooer) who had spun and I
was deemed to have gone the wrong way and started at the back. Jack Rambo blew
an engine right in front of me & John as we were about to put a lap on him I
recall.

Jeez this really is etched in my memory!

Better create rec.auto.simulators.igps_nostalgia

Don't feel bad, I'm not nearly as fast as a bunch of those guys either.
Like a lot of pooeple have tlearned over the last 3 years is that in
GPL, it's more a matter of being consistent and not falling too far
behind so that you're in a position to capitalize on another driver's
mistake (or misfortune).

My first win in IGPS was at Mexico and was due to a last-lap disco for
Graeme Nash who was like 30 seconds ahead of me.  That's a sucky way to
win, but hey - points are points. I also won at Monaco because Graeme
was having problems (again).  Consider that I spun a few times, and then
ran out of gas, but I never gave up and kept fighting back and was there
when Graeme stuck his nose into the haybales at the top of that hairpin
hill.  :)

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that if you just go out there to
have fun and finish, things usually turn out better than you expect.

BTW, what chassis are you running in GPL?  Have you tried the Brabham?
That's a tough little car (and I won the IGPS/2 season in one).  I found
that you can throw it around a bit more than the more twitchy cars.  I
turned better times at the ring in a Brabham than I did with the Eagle
(my "other" GPL car), but the Brabham pretty much sucks for top-end
speed so isn't as appropriate for tracks like Monza or Spa.

Of course, you probably already know all this stuff.  :)

IGPS - Moment in History

by Markus Stiepe » Fri, 05 Apr 2002 22:53:37

sheez, shivers ran down my spine when I discovered this thread!
I remember getting up in the middle of the night at about 3am to take part
in the IGPS races, only to go to work at 6 :) I dont recall missing a race
in season 2 I believe it was. Man, those were great events, hosted by the
best dictator ever seen !

As for us germans, Alex Marx is still very active in GPL, havent heard
anything from Thorsten Kuehnel for a long time though. We are still very
busy racing online in our german league, you might wanna check out
http://www.vr-gpl.de/index2.htm for this.

Maybe we meet again on track?
