: I have a 5x86 133mhz with 32mb ram, and a cheap-o Trident VLB video card. I
: installed the new ICR2 patch, and noticed that with Univbe installed, running
: around Indy with all detail in svga except asphalt and grass texture I was
: getting 20fps on the front stretch and 23fps on the back. This was in
: preseason testing with no traffic or people in the stands. I "borrowed" an
: ATI Mach64 PCI with 2 meg from work and put it on my machine. I could only
: get around 10 to 15 fps under identical circumstances. What could be making
: this card suck so bad? I tried Univbe on and off and didn't make a
: difference. The ATI is much better in Windows, but I only play Dos ICR2.
: Which card will give best Dos results and still fly in Windows?
The ATI Mach 64 does not work with ICR2 and the univbe that is packaged
with it (version 5.1). However, I found that with the patched version
of ICR2 and using univbe 5.2 there was a minor increase in frame rate
(only 1-2 fps). There is also a new version of ATI's own vesa 2.0
driver available at their web site (I think the URL is
http://www.racesimcentral.net/). Unfortunately the ATI does not seem
to peform well (compared with other cards) in DOS. Though I do enjoy
its Windows performance and stability. If you are looking for a video
card, you might want to look at some of the new 3-D cards just coming
out (Diamond Stealth and Matrox both have cards for under $200).
