A couple of questions about SCGT, before I buy it

by Starfleet Comma » Mon, 12 Jul 1999 04:00:00

When I first played Sports Car GT [demo], I wasn't all too impressed.
However, today I gave it a second try and I am now hooked. So much so
in fact that I would like to buy the full product.

A couple of questions however.

1) In the demo, every so often (completely at random) the game stops
and returns me to Windows. I'm not pressing any keys and I'm not
receiving any error messages. What is causing this, and how can I
prevent it? I'm a little concerned that this may happen in the full
version, because if I buy it it will be just before I go off for my
Summer holidays, and I won't be able to return the product if there's
a problem.

2) How many tracks and cars are there in SCGT?

3) Are there patches, tracks, utilities, etc., available for
downloading from the internet for this sim?

4) Is there a way to switch on/off traction control and ABS brakes? I
haven't found an option for this in the demo.

5) For those of you who own the sim, what would you rate it, out of
ten?

Cheers!!

A couple of questions about SCGT, before I buy it

Go out and buy it! Between ToCA2, and SCGT, I haven't hardly touched any
other sim in weeks!

I've never had it crash out to windows on me yet, there are cheat codes
available to open up all the cars and tracks. As for how many cars they
advertise over 50 cars and teams, however some of them are duplicates. Like
the 911's and BMW M3's, it's no GT, but it's also no arcade playstation game
either.

As for internet support there are several websites with lots of goodies that
you can download, including tweaks to change the dynamics.

On a scale from 1 to 10, I'd give it an 7.5... Only because of a few minor
items, such as no visible damage when you crash or make contact, the menu
system isn't the best (not the worst either however), the fact that you
don't see your own headlights when driving at night, and the fact that
without cheat codes, you have to work your way up through career mode to get
to GT1 cars and more difficult tracks, also no open***pit WSC cars

But.... The graphics are great, the driving model is very well done, the AI
are realistic, not like some sims where they act like their in a demolition
derby, and the races are very challenging, including the necessity to make
pit stops, for fuel!

Considering that $35 would buy a good meal at a decent restaurant, or a
really nice bottle of wine, or a new pair of jeans, or a single tennis shoe
:-) you'll get a lot more enjoyment out of this sim/game!

Cheers

There is a simple fix for this one:  You need to disable your Windows
screen saver (and any energy saver settings for your monitor) when
playing SCGT.  This applies for the full version as well.  When the
screen saver timeout occurs and the screen saver should kick in, SCGT
kicks YOU out to the desktop -- the screensaver should be disabled by
the SCGT program, but it isn't.  Annoying, but the game is worth it.

I think there are 12 different tracks (you can run at least a couple
in reverse), but I'm not sure how many cars.  It's a pretty wide
variety of GTQ, GT1, GT2, and GT3 cars, including the Porsche 911, BMW
M3, Panoz Esperante at the GTQ end, and covering the spectrum on up
from there.  No Viper, though -- that's why we've got Viper Racing, I
guess! <G>

The GT Insider Web site rocks -- they've got tons of patches, tons of
additional dashboard graphics, and quite a few add-on cars, too.  Plus
a couple of SCGT options editors, and the SCGT 1.551 patch (which
improves things quite a bit).  Check them out at:

Hmm . . . not sure.  In career mode, ABS is an upgrade you have to
purchase, and I don't recall whether or not you can switch it off in
the demo.  There are a couple of updates for the demo at the GT
Insider site that improve the realism, though, so be sure you check
that out first.

I split my time these days between GPL, Viper Racing, and SCGT.  It's
a great sim -- definitely in my top 3.  I tend to prefer sims over
arcade racers (NFS3 does absolutely nothing for me, for example) and I
find SCGT to be very satisfying.  Well worth the money, I think.
There are a cheat codes which unlock all the cars and tracks, BTW, so
you can either play through a season unlocking cars and tracks as you
advance, or you can just go for the meat right at first -- either way
is a ton of fun.

Hope this helps!

I have disabled the screen saver and energy saving options, but the
problem still exists. Do you have another suggestion, and this is a
damned annoying problem.

Are there any extra views in SCGT? I do wish there were a***pit
view. In GPL I recently discovered a way to increase the number of
views by editing one of the ini files. Is there anything like this in
SCGT? I find only the exterior views to be any good.

There is an in-car view.  And over at the GT Insider we have many***pits
to add to that.  As well as a new update for the game which I will release
as soon as myself and Ben are done with it.  Hit F4 a couple of times while
driving, that should bring you to the in-car***pit.
