Let's talk about something interesting.  WSC is apparently going to
employ the latest and greatest incarnation of DX8.  Anyone have any
concerns about this?  N4 is dropping Glide in favor of D3D altogether.
Should we be concerned by this?  Just ordered my new system with a
GeForce2 and Nvidia's reputation for shaky drivers has me concerned
about all of this...not extremely, but still concerned.

Assuming N4 FINALLY delivers something worth talking about and WSC
takes us closer to the peaks of Mount Olympus, how long does everyone
think GP3 will dominate the discussion board? (I want to know when to
come back ::)

it's been out less than 48hrs and you think we're 'done' !?!?!

This one will be around for a long time, I guarantee it.

A little sarcasm for ya. ::)  GP3 is the GP2 patch that never was.  The
only sad part is that the sim is recognized as the best because of a
lack of competition.  Would we all be singing its praises if Papy ever
got off its ass and gave us a GPL-powered CART or modern F1 sim?  I
somehow doubt it, but there you have it.  Even a Hyundai looks exciting
when the rest of the landscape is filled with Yugos. ::)

Ok now all the hype is going to WSC.  Everyone is going to hype up that like
they did with GP3.  And when(if) it fails to meet everyones expectations the
flaming and abuse will start all over again.
Hell these are only games, not a matter of live and death

Come back as soon as the warez version of WSC comes out. ;-)

Don't be affraid by such thing.  Why would you be concerned if they drop
Glide? It wouldn't help much your GeForce card ;-)

Nascar 4 will have a D3D and also an OpenGL rasterizer, if we go by the
words of the latest preview in PC Gamer.  Best of both worlds.

My main concern is with the lack of efficiency in Direct3D and my lack
of experience with chipsets other than 3Dfx. ::)  Mainly I just wanted
to change the subject...

Have you SEEN the pics and interviews regarding WSC?  The screenshots
are hype enough in themselves!  I've been privy to some detailed info
on how the cars are to be modeled and am quite confident that the West
brothers do not intend to fall short in the ways GP3(and F1200, SCGT,
etc.) has.  All we have right now are screenshots and amazing as WSC's
graphics look, we cannot know how it will drive, but I'd be willing to
bet that the bros.' obvious passion for racing will come through in
spades when the sim finally ships.  Let's not forget about N4 as well.
Papy has certainly pissed away most of their credibility, but any
design team with their credentials and obvious ability to produce
masterpieces when the mood takes them is sure to produce SOMETHING
worth buying again.

uncounted electrons thus:

nVidia doesn't have such a rep. At least not with me. The
official drivers ('Detonator') are pretty good and as stable as
those from any other card manufacturer. What they *do* however is
use the enthusiasts on the nVidia newsgroup as unofficial beta
testers - new drivers are always leaked...

FWIW I think the current Detonators are version 5.22... There are
beta versions of series 6 drivers around as well, though...  ^_^

YMMV, of course

I've read of numerous problems in the GeForce2's development cycle and
that was why I originally avoided the new chipset, but the technical
capabilities of the card combined with the OCed rig I'm building were
too much to resist.  I'm hoping for better framerates and higher
performance at high-resolutions with a 64MB GTS card. <fingers crossed>

They don't even come close to the quality of the 3DFX drivers for the
V5. I had a Geforce2 and the driver quality was my biggest complaint.

WSC is going to have a one track one car demo as did GPL. GP3 never had a
demo and as a result, many people felt ripped off when the title appeared on
the shelves, and failed to meet expectations. With WSC we will have the
opportunity to get a taste of things to come, so I somehow doubt that any
flaming and abuse will be anywhere near the order of magnitude of GP3, if
the West Bros fail to deliver.

In an interview at simracing news they even mention a possible port to
the Mac and Linux... this one really has me on the edge of my
seat. Although I don't find sports car racing fascinating in itself,
the open architecture they describe might make it quite easy to hack
up just about any era / physics of modern racing.
