YIKES! Did anyone else catch this?
At the Goodwood vintage races, this guy flipped and was ejected from
his open***pit Ferrari. He got pitched about 20 feet in the air, and
by some miracle landed on the impact barrier basically unhurt.

That accident really showed how dangerous those cars were (are!).

That happened back in the fall.  The editor of the (dearly
departed) magazine "On Track" went on a rant suggesting that rich
dilettante racers shouldn't be getting in over their heads and such
dangerous old machinery should be scrapped.  A certain Ms. Alison Hine
sent him a scathing letter and set him straight.  :)

nothing to be frightened of, and no limit, any fool could get into
a motor car and racing would not exist as a sport." -- Jim Clark

Sorry. I didn't see this accident before, and I was going by what the
broadcaster said, which was that the driver went to the hospital but
was OK.

I was actually there and saw it as it happened (Albeit at a distance from
the other side of the track on a diamond screen). It frightened the life out
of us at the time. I can't remember who it was but the guy recieved a broken
collarbone and ribs. When the wreck truck drove past us, I can vouch for the
fact that the car was an absolute mess. The fact that he was thrown out of
the car probably saved his life.

Yep. Stick them in a museum and these cars slowly lose their soul and die.

These cars are better prepared and looked after now than they were in their
heyday. Sometimes, maybe too well.

Just an observation.....

Aint it strange that when a driver dies in a race, people are quick to say
that at least that he died doing something he loved doing. When a historic
car - an ageing piece of steel - gets wrecked, it's a major travesty.

Just beating the hornet's nest with a stick again <G>
