I wonder why armraising is realized in GPL. Is it to give a sign like:
"Yahoo, I'd won the race!!" or (entering Parabolica in the first lap)
"Caution, Surtees, don't bite my gearbox!!" ?

Usually it's used to warn other drivers, if you have car troubles or
there's an accident up ahead. But it's very difficult to see another
person raising his arm, you have to drive very close to him, so I
don't think it's used very much. I never see it being used in online
races.

Or perhaps I just need glasses :)

This was usually a signal that their car broke or for some reason, they
are out of the race. Remember, no electronic transmitters in those days were
used. Signals all the way.

If you get a chance, watch the movie Grand Prix.  At Monaco they show
exactly what the arm raising is for.  Speedvision will be cablecasting
it this Saturday night.

Raising your arm is indeed used to signal other drivers. Not only if the
car broke down, but also to signal that the car behind you may pass.
This does seem to work in GPL. If you raise your arm AI drivers will
often immedialtely pass you.

It also a signal to say "I'm entring in pits, i'm going to slow down.".

Arrgghhh!!!  I'm constantly reminded of how badly I wish my cable company
carried Speedvision.  I think they've started throwing my unopened letters
away by this point.

I've got a silly question. If you turn off the drivers arms in the
graphics options for the gain in frame-rate, do the other drivers still
see the arm when you press the space key or whatever key has been
selected for that option?  DBH

Let's go, David, we both make a test, when other drivers react about
our arms: me with the arm-option turned on and you turned off. I had
ther impreesion, that other cars driving behind me (when I'm slow),
are just waiting on my signal. Only Surtees (I love him) seems to wait
for a signal *not* to try passing me. I see, what arm-raisng helps.

well as in lower formulas today with no radio communications, a raised arm
means danger ahead or I'm slowing down or have a problem or something.

It was a nice idea for GPL only tht its hard to see AI cars ahead do it and
AI cars still take you out when you do it.

Uli,
I think you missed my point. What I would like to know is if other
racers in on-line races can see the arm if I have it turned off.
And.... the Ai that I have on my puter don't  seem to wait for much of
anything. Let alone, for me to signal for them to pass. Certainly not
Surtees!!  :-)  DBH
