GP2: Speed up maximum detail.

Hiya all.

I recently saw on a m8's BBS that for GP2 he likes to run in full
trackside detail but on circuits like monza and imola there are to
many trees.  If he lowers the detail the trees disapper along with the
buildings!! BUMMER!!  To get around this he has just deleted the trees
jam file in the Imola track dir.  Now he runs in full detail, minus
the trees!!!  This could be done for other details, so the sky is the
limit.
Well Done Simon Harmel.

This has got to be the best GP2 tip I've seen ! I have a P100 and
those trees really annoy me ! Thanks for passing it on :)

I deleted the trees from this circuit and also at Hockenheim.

it does get rid of the trees but unfortunately i was left with big
skyscraper lookalikes instead.  Not sure if it was just me, but i
restored the tree jams anyway.

Anyone else have any luck??

How do you know which jam files to delete ? I looked in the Monza jam
directory, and while you can tell some are road signs jams, how do you
recognize the tree jams. Trial and error ?

Just have a look at the bitmaps converted by GP2JAM.

Use the jam file editor GP2JAM from T. Kellaway to convert the
t_xxx.jam files to t_xxx.bmp files.
In your BMP-Editor (like Paint from Win95) load the bmp file and get
the light green backround color.Mark all,cut and fill the empty
picture completely with the backround green.
Save the file and convert it back to t_xxx.jam with GP2JAM.
You have to do this for each single t_xxx.jam file.
Next time you start your GP2 you'll see ... nothing!

The jam files for the trees are named like "t_xxx.jam".

I've got all the JAM files viewable on my web site -
http://s10d.smb.man.ac.uk/~pps/gp2jams.html
So you can check out which ones are trees and might be worth deleting.

Don't bother over painting the tree jams green.....it won't help at
all!

As a test, I ran a lap at Monza at full detail and saved it as a hot
lap. I then replayed and checked occupancy at several points thoughout
the lap. I then took the 4 tree jams and painted them the proper green
that makes them transparent on the track. Again, I checked occupancy
on the same hot lap. Finally, I deleted the 4 tree jams and repeated
the process. Final result: Deleting the jams decrease occupancy
tremendously. Painting the jams a solid green does absolutely nothing
for occupancy. It does, however, remove the big grey walls that appear
without the jams, but thats it.

If some stud hacker could figure out how to remove the gray walls the
bitmaps are projected on in full detail, we could all have great
framerates...full detail minus trees....and low occupancy (alt-d does
it but it also removes other opbjects).  Besides, I don't think trees
add to the feel of the race like full grandstands and track side
objects do.

For those interested here are the results of my experiment:

Track           Regular         Green           No
Location                Jam             Jam             Jam
_______         _______         ______          _______
1st chicane     93              93              73
1st sign                100             100             60
1st bridge      120             120             86
2nd chicane     100             100             66
1st Lesmos      86              86              60
2nd Lesmos      93              93              60
2nd sign                100             100             60
3rd sign                113             113             80
bridge          133             133             93
4th sign                100             100             66
3rd chicane     93              93              60
5 sign          73              73              60
6 sign          86              86              53
Parabolioca     80              80              46
7th sign                86              86              66
Finish          86              86              66

If you want a lower occupancy and you don't mind the grey walls,
delete the tree jams.
