Another Racer Passes....

by Race15 » Mon, 18 Nov 2002 00:25:07

My Father passed away suddenly on Thursday morning, November 14, 2002, at the
age of 75.  He raced Stockcars in the bullrings around Chicago in the mid-late
fifties. When he turned 50, in 1977, he took up drag racing at old Oswego
Dragway in Oswego Illinois, just west of Chicago, running a self built 1975
Nova name "Pretty Baby".

His drink of choice was Crown Royal.
His sport of choice was Auto Racing.
His passion were his Family and Friends,
But the smile on his face and the twinkle in his eye was put there by Mary
Catherine, an beautiful Irish Catholic girl, in 1948.

Many men talk of being in the shadow of thier Fathers... My Brother and I found
that it wasn't a shadow, but shade.  It was his love.  It shielded us from harm
and kept us warm and safe from the world, until we ventured out into it on our
own.  But we were always able to return to it, whenever we needed his help and
wisdom.

My Father gave us our love of the sport of auto racing, and for that I am truly
grateful.  The hours spent at the track, or in front of the television,
discussing the this and the that of the sport were time well spent and will be
remembered forever.

For those of you who I have met here, or in the racing days past on Hawaii, Ten
and VROC, I just felt the need to let you know that a terrific Father, Racer
and Gentleman passed through this world, and left his mark with Brother and
myself.

I'm going to give you simple advice, call your Mother and Father NOW!  RIGH
NOW! Tell them you love them, you never know when it will be the last time...

Thanks for listening
Michael Loos

My condolences on the passing of your father.

I call my mother nearly every week long distance to keep in touch even
though I'm 55. I wish I could talk to my Dad as well, but he passed away 16
years ago.

Thanks to all who responded here and by E-mail, your thoughts and prayers are
greatly appreciated.

On a side note,  my Father was Mark Martins biggest fan.  He thought Mark was
the epitome of what a racer should be, aggresive, clean and a Gentleman. He had
a yearly, running bet with a friend of his that Mark Martin would win.  I would
love to collect that bet for him this Sunday.
He was so e***d that it had come down to the last race of the season and that
Martin had a shot, although he cussed NASCAR like a sailor after they took 25
points away from Martin, he was looking forward to watching the race this
weekend.

So I ask that all you guys put aside your favorite driver for this weekend and
pull hard for Martin, it would do my Dad proud.

Thanks again for all the heartfelt responses from myself and my family,

Sincerely
Michael Loos
