Well, just played f1, and whilst the graphics are excellent running on
200mmx with 3dfx, and frame rates are fine, the rest of the game PLAIN
SUCKS. It feels like you're driving a stock car, not an F1 car. What F1 car
maxes out at 165mph? I could run faster than those cars accelerate. Why the
*** do so many game companies constantly *** up? If the cars were to
behave like real f1 cars, and not look so fat, and those blasted menus
would go away, the game would be pretty good. Sure it's no simulation, and
CANNOT TOUCH GP2, but it could be a good game.
I wrote Microprose and asked if there was a 3d patch for gp2 coming out,
and they said no. All gp2 needs is a ***y 3dfx patch and it would rock.
Right now I have to play SVGA on medium detail, at around 30fps. How do you
play anything lower than 30fps? I think we can all agree that game
companies should ask us about the games before they make them, but no they
think they know how to make a game...
BTW I tried the d3d and 3dfx versions of f1 and the 3dfx kills....

: Apparently Geoff Crammond s working on the next GP2 title, and it will

And will it come out with bugs/flaws that will never be fixed?

I am not "sticking" it to Geoff. But, we can't have it both ways. The
latest buzz in this group is that we "can't" get a bug fix and patch for
GP2 cuz Microprose doesn't own the rights to it, Geoff does. Well, the
story is the same no matter who owns the right. It was flawed, it
wasn't fixed. Geoff is a God and Microprose is the Devil? Ah come on,
there's no difference. If one is wrong for not fixing it, so is the
other.

One of the few times I disagree with you Michael! :)
I don't see GP2 as requiring a bu-fix or patch because it was "flawed", by
that definition every game would require such a thing if it were less than
perfect (which of course everything is). Patches are designed to fix things
which do not work as they should - in GP2 pretty much everything does work
as it should. The things people refer to which required fixing are flaws in
conception or design rather than programming flaws, and would be nigh
impossible to "patch". Slow SVGA graphics and lack of networking are
fundamentals of the game and must be virtually impossible to implement even
midway through coding, never mind after they are done. Look at how long it
took to finish GP2 after Papyrus upped the stakes to SVGA - adding SVGA
took forever.
Neither Geoff nor Microprose is wrong for not "fixing" it, it doesn't need
fixed. What we do require is a GP3 which is everything GP2 should have
been, including MMX and 3dFX/Rendition support, and proper 8+ player
networking/modem code. Pining for a GP2 patch to address these things seems
unlikely to bear fruit - if you invested that much time on improving the
game engine and networking it would be far better to update a few more
things and call it a whole new product - like Papyrus did with NASCAR2.

I think if he really cared about the people who purchase his games
he would do something to actually give us the great sim that was promised
and not just going onto GP3 on his own. Personally I will not "buy" either
Microprose's next GP3 if they have one, or Geoff's GP3 when he does one,
both of them dropped the ball on supporting us, and both of them share the
blame as far as my future spending money is concerned.
I love GP2, but I sure wish they would fix those 8 second pitstops where
you can get the engine replaced, and the replays that actually change
what happened to you when you come back to real time.
While I am on it, Wet Weather racing cries out to be added, as was promised.
I had forgot how much fun this was in GP1 until playing Psygnosis F1 recently.
Cheers.
