N3 replay question

by Brad Rosenbau » Fri, 01 Oct 1999 04:00:00

I have a question about watching replays during a
multiplayer event.  It seems that I cannot watch other cars as
the manual says.  When I switch to a different car, it will switch
views, but only for a minute.  Then it will switch to some other
car.  After a few seconds it will switch again.  It just keeps
scrolling through different cars.  I can switch views ok
(in car, chase, etc...), but I can't keep it on a particular car.
Also the arrow keys (next, prev) for switching the view to
different cars does not seem to work either.  Is there something
that I am doing wrong??

I have this same problem.

Are you racing as a client (not hosting the race)? I think you are
seeing the only data your PC 'knows' about. The clients only have
positional information for 8 or so cars ahead, and a few behind. This
is the data you see during the race (especially bad when cars are in
the pits and a wreck is just past them on the front stretch, pass the
pits and whammo! look at all those roadblocks!).

Your replay data is the same. You can only switch to a car in this 12
car moving window that surrounds your own car. When the car you are
viewing moves more than 8 ahead of you on the track, or 3 behind you,
the replay file no longer has the data to display, so it switches
cars.

I think (and gonna check in a few minutes) that a host replay file has
ALL the data for all cars. Same logic.

I am assuming a fair amount here, but I'm sure I will be corrected if
I am wrong :-)

That makes sense to me, and would explain why it works fine offline.

Thanks,

It's called warp folks.  When a car disappears on the track during a race it
disappears from the replay too.  Replay switches to another car that is on the
track, most likely the pace car sitting in the pits.  If you keep trying to
watch one particular car and it keeps switching away from it, then that car
had a terrible connection and was warping all over the place.

Nope.

that may be true, but the phenomonen I described has been the rule for
every warp free LAN race I've run as a client (about 100 from N2 thru
N3).

It also "just makes sense"

You are undoubtedly correct that warp will cause the same effect, but
negating warp still leaves only a window of cars within 'range' of
your own that you can view. When a car moves out of that window (every
lap when your car is out of commission in the pits and the field is
still running) you see exactly what Brad Rosenbaum describes.

Also, what kind of quote is
"I have the same problem.
Jim"
?

I never said that. Please tell me you didn't fabricate that to
simplify your reply.

Thanks,

Jim Burlis

Its part of the protocol.  Remember the original bandwidth target was 9600
baud.  To meet that target the client isn't constantly updated on the
locations for EVERY car, only a select few ahead and behind.

The host's replay however (without warping) should have every car at all
times.

I used to have this problem in N1 and N2. I think it's due to warping. When
the car gets whacked for a moment from your perspective, you lose it in the
replay, also.
