My V5 5500 Died.

My NFS:PU always gives me an error when I exit. I have a V5500 AGP

Sorry HockyTown.  What did you do about it?

Just finished watching Band of Brothers.
I definetly recommend it to everyone.

[ . . .

One of the NFS games (Not sure which one, but I think the one just before
Hot Pursuit) ran on my GeForce2 GTS but with a few ugly graphics anomalies,
especially in the wheels. I think the NFS games for the most part were best
suited to Voodoo cards.

I have Hot Pursuit (got it bundled with something or other) but haven't
tried it yet on any machine. Which version of NFS are you having the trouble
with?

You might want to try the latest reference drivers from nVidia's site rather
than whatever it is Visiontek is supplying. But my guess is your NFS just
prefers Glide.

I have one machine with a Voodoo3 just for games like that.

Thanks Seneca:

Does it run on your GTS?  I think my buddies can live with
some minor weirdness.

Here is the plan for today.  Take the GF 2 MX 400 back to
CompUSA, swap in a GF 3.  I wonder what a P3/600 will do with
it.

If that doesn't work, there are still a few V5/5500s to be
found on the net.  I just didn't have time to get one Saturday.
I'll put my old V5 back in the PC.  It seems to be OK if I
don't try to go 3D with it.  I've been hired to move a program
I developed on Solaris over to Windows, so I'll be able to
work with the old card and expect the new V5 to arrive before
next Friday.  And I'll return the GF 3 to CompUSA, because the
GF3 Ultra MIGHT be coming out before I get whatever AMD is
selling early next year.  Or we may all be driving and flying
with ATI Radions.

   I appreciate everybody's help.

                                                       Thanks

Don't know about a 600 but I had my GF3 in an 800 for a week and it was
still seriously fast, I think you will do fine.

My V5 5500 Died.

[ . . . ]

I'm not sure what you mean by "it," Larry. As mentioned, the NFS version I
used, which I think was the one before Hot Pursuit, ran on my GTS but with
some graphics problems. The problems didn't interfere with play but did make
it ugly in some respects, e.g. black polygons appearing in the wheels. I
haven't yet used any later version of NFS, and I don't know what version
you're using.

My guess is that anything that runs on the GeForce2 GTS will also run on the
MX, and vice versa, since they are based on the same chip architecture. I
don't really know that, just presuming. But I can tell you that Midtown
Madness is simply unplayable on EITHER my GTS or MX, and it behaves exactly
the same way on both: it starts out fine, but within a couple of minutes big
polygons of various colors start popping up all over the screen, and this
rapidly gets worse until you just can't see what you're doing. But the same
game runs just fine on my Voodoo3, no problems of any kind. This is somewhat
surprising because it doesn't use Glide at all.

There seem to be some games that just do not like the GeForce2 chipsets.
Jane's WWII Fighters ran fine on my TNT, but produces unsightly blue
triangles on the horizon when run on a GeForce2 (either one). Also, Crimson
Skies (which is known to be a horrendously buggy game anyway) will not run
on my GTS. It goes through all the intro stuff and cut scenes, but crashes
almost immediately after the first mission starts. It does this every time,
both before and after the 1.02 patch. (It runs fine on my Voodoo3 for about
ten missions. Then there's a mission on which it crashes every time. So
that's going back to the store. Microsoft's 30-day guarantee is the best
thiing about Crimson Skies.)

What version of NFS are you having the problem with?

My V5 5500 Died.

Thanks Seneca:

The NFS we're playing is Porsche Unleashed, or
Porsche 2000 as it's called in europe.

I walked into CompUSA and they graciously
refunded the $130.00 USD for the Geforece 2 MX400.

If I was going to walk out of there with a
$400 Geforce 3, with the similar architecture
and perhaps event the same drivers it didn't seem
reasonable for me to risk returning it after
hurtling it against the same sim.  They wouldn't
mind if I wanted to bring my PC in.  They would
try to install the Geforce 3 and if it failed in
the store, no problem.  But as I mentioned, this
PC is a tool of my trade, I couldn't leave it
at CompUSA for a day or two, which was how long
they wanted to keep it.

Anyway... I just ordered an  OEM  Voodoo 5/5500
for $153.  This is a card in a box, no CD, no
paperwork.  This is the best chance of running the
game, and I'll save my pennies for a new PC with
whatever the hot card is.

   Thanks to everybody.
