Are you running a CD burner as your main drive?  Some games don't like that...

And some games (well, the copy protection) even hate some older CD drives.

Done with complete disrespect to the honest user, and completely irrelevant to
the pirates... ;)

If I'm stating the obvious then disregard the following. But that happened
to me with a totally different game and what I had to do was ..

Clean the CD, clean the CD lens and lastly because that didn't work was use
a CD repairer which worked. That is why I hate having to use the damm CD's
all the time.  Oh yeah one other thing ...I burnt a laser on a CD too and
had to replace the CD player..

Fun fun fun..

How did you know the laser had crapped out?

Good question Eldred,

To cut a long story short this was deduced after process of elimination.

The problem CD player was installed into another system and using same disk
got same problem.

The player refused to recongise anything on it and could be heard spinning.

Yes different drivers were tried as well with no difference.

The disk was put into another player and all was well.

Perhaps someone more technically qualified can explain how a laser can burn
out.
