Reactor installation not always easy...

by Michael Peters » Sat, 09 Nov 1996 04:00:00

I had a problem installing my reactor card yesterday.

I have a Micron p5-133 16mb ram. My old card was a DS 2mb vram.

I installed the new card and win95 started up.
Win95 detected the new card and then asked for some directx drivers.
Now, in hindsight it was asking for the files that are on the driver disk
it just couldn't read them. When I went to reload the drivers...Win95
crashed hard. Everytime I tried to switch either the drivers, or put back
in the DS card it crashed. I had to reinstall Win95 (not that hard) with
the Reactor in and it ran good.

Now with that said. WOW. After running ICR2 I was speechless. Now where
is that Nascar2...

The Reactor is slower in normal Win95 operations than the DS, but not too
bad. (It took Diamond awhile to get the Win95 drivers to the point that
they are at now)

Even with the problems, it was well worth it.

On another note, Intergraph's tech support is great. I called them when I
was having problems. They called me back with some suggestions and even
emailed me to see if I got it fixed. That was reason enough to buy the
card from them instead of Sierra or CL.

I assume you know to use Win95's default b/w cursors as color or
animated ones turn off all 2D acceleration.

>I had the same problems. Reinstalled windows95 and it worked.

However at one point, I restarted in DOS mode, ran ICR2, and after
exiting ICR2, at the dos prompt,I stopped the computer instead of typing
exit ( to restart windows ).

The next day, windows locked up again. Another reinstall.
So beware, this card is very touchy.

Also, I tried NFS SE, not only it did not run, but if forced a system
boot and guess what ?
That's right. Another lock up. another reinstall. This is very annoying.

I've been running it constantly for 2 weeks now and not one hang up.
I had tons of NFS problems for other things..mainly steering wheel
problems..so for NFS to crash, I am not surprised...NFS long since
deleted.

I couldn't agree more.  I too had basically the same problem installing the
card.  But once the drivers were loaded properly...

Intergraph's help line (an 800 number is wonderful, after dealing with
Microsoft) is the finest in the industry.  They are one of the best reasons to
choose this card.
