Steve,

I really enjoyed your GT4 piece--I hope the pictures that ran with it
were ok :)  My first experience with the 'USB Flash Drive Thingy', and
an 'interesting' GT4 feature, for sure.

I am looking forward to reading your thoughts on Forza, if it comes out
sometime, that is :)

providing I don't p*ss the wrong peeps off.

funny that ASS, being the mouthpiece for FILSCA, takes such a dim view of
FIRSTs rumoured series.

I also dont think Niles understood what was meant in the quote from Kaemmer
"The real problem is that we're reaching the wrong customers". I think youll
find that he's referring to the kids in ToysRUs who pick up the game because
it says NASCAR on it, not the small band of merry modders, nor the larger
group of *** sim racers who partake in these games.

Great interview with Alx Danielsson, especially like the bit where he's
talking about not using the autoclutch in his sims.

"Buying the code and claiming rights to everything about the game, including
the EULA is akin to buying Tolkiens typewriter and saying you have the
rights to Lord of the Rings".

What a load of rubbish, which i think sums up part of our communities
misunderstanding of whats happening.

Hows this?

They buy the original Lord of the Rings manuscript and ownership of the
copyright.

There are guys out there at the moment who seem to be up in arms because
(still running with the LOTR analogy here) they have been told they can no
longer change the 2nd chapter of the book and publish it themselves.

The Pits would just be releasing code that modifies a few words here and
there, and im quite interested to see how that pans out.

And since when was R.A.S a Google group? ;)

To continue the analogy - broadcast networks buy (or license) the right to
show a movie, say LOTR, on TV.  But do the original copyright holders--the
people who wrote, financed, produced, directed, finished and distributed the
movie--have the right to complain when the networks alter the "executable"?
That is, when the network re-edits the film for length, or to fit the
screen, or to delete language, or even to 'colorize' a b/w movie?  (The
obvious answer is: No, they do not.)

that obviously depends on the license that the broadcaster has purchased.

Id guess Steven Spielberg would go ape if a network who had purchased the
rights to show Jurassic Park had filmed a scene with a Giant Panda and
inserted it halfway through the movie to "make it better".

Hi; just a quick point about FILSCA & FIRST - both, it would appear, are
interested in doing the same thing but - there are 2 differences here - the
first, mmm, is that FILSCA is free and the second, moe importanly, is that
filsca's members are affiliated leagues - who happen to be the back bone of
the sim community, and have been since day one of online racing. FIRST's
model, if rumour is true (and who knows?) is to replace the league managers
(that is, guys like us) with a corporation. With SimBin's dedicated server
issues, it would seem that the small league owners are being slowly squeezed
out in  favour of corporate run leagues - which, as it happens, was
precisely why filsca was founded to begin with.

It's just a hobby, yes, and it's just for fun, yes, but there's probably
money to be made from monopolising the leagues and who runs them; right now,
they are run by guys like John from Comet, for free, and for the hell of it.
FIRST's model would change this forever. And we all lose in that event ...

In fact, most broadcasts of movies on, say, TNT, have their credits pages
either reduced or double-speeded (I know, I get pissed everytime, I'm a
credits junkie). And I recall the whole episode of Magnum when Selleck was
angered by the fact that his voice sounded too squeaky - only to find out
the channel that was re-running magnum had speeded the episodes up by a few
percent.

Pez,

That is my mistake, and I was abbreviating rec.auto.simulators. (RAS)
According to my Google Beta Groups page, this is a Google 'Group'.  My
apologies for the confusion.

AutoSimSport Vol 1 Issue 3 out soon...

by Steve Smit » Sun, 20 Mar 2005 06:59:28

Alex,

I think you need an inteview w. D. Kaemmer as to his intentions.  A
statement from him, at the very least.

> Hi; just a quick point about FILSCA & FIRST - both, it would appear, are
> interested in doing the same thing but - there are 2 differences here -
the
> first, mmm, is that FILSCA is free and the second, moe importanly, is that
> filsca's members are affiliated leagues - who happen to be the back bone
of
> the sim community, and have been since day one of online racing. FIRST's
> model, if rumour is true (and who knows?) is to replace the league
managers
> (that is, guys like us) with a corporation. With SimBin's dedicated server
> issues, it would seem that the small league owners are being slowly
squeezed
> out in  favour of corporate run leagues - which, as it happens, was
> precisely why filsca was founded to begin with.

> It's just a hobby, yes, and it's just for fun, yes, but there's probably
> money to be made from monopolising the leagues and who runs them; right
now,
> they are run by guys like John from Comet, for free, and for the hell of
it.
> FIRST's model would change this forever. And we all lose in that event ...

> > funny that ASS, being the mouthpiece for FILSCA, takes such a dim view
of
> > FIRSTs rumoured series.

> > I also dont think Niles understood what was meant in the quote from
> > Kaemmer
> > "The real problem is that we're reaching the wrong customers". I think

larger
> > group of *** sim racers who partake in these games.
