are there any pitfalls one should be aware of when using Brian
Beckman's series as reference for implementing a simple simulator?

Just that most of it is unorthodox and books generally take a
different route. But any route is ok, as long as you can follow it
enough to program it. :)

physics is fraught with pitfalls.  All those funny symbols and odd
equations.  Combine that with programming and it is something I'm glad YOU
are attmpting and not me.

sounds great.  I'm on a (very) strict budget, and those SAE-books are
a bit to expensive for my tastes.
