Rallying is absolutely about finding the fastest route, not staying on the
road. Was it Akropolis or some other rally earlier this year when a lot of
drivers were reported constantly cutting corners on the inside, just to
win a few extra tenths. As a results, they had plenty of tire bursts
though ;)

Oh come on, not the old "if it's not in the game, close your eyes and
pretend it's there". That argument might have worked with the 80's polygon
racers, but not anymore. If you bother coding shading differences and
dynamic lighting, you should be arsed to bother implementing a decent
collision model.

Riding 20 minutes on the edge, then make a HUGE mistake and roll the car
into a tree but magically recover in 0.5 seconds and win. Talk about an
anti-climax!

Hmmm, I watched a Network Q Rallye stage Sunday afternoon on BBC, and
I noticed that the WRC drivers used the grass a LOT for a perfect
entry/exit of a turn. When they exited the last turn of that stage,
entering the last straight to the finish, they drove at least 100
yards over the grass.
