F1 Indy: What is that noise?

by Dave Henri » Mon, 01 Oct 2001 05:59:19

No matter where the camera's were following a car, you could hear any
other car as it shot down the main straight.  The echo's from the two
grandstands is tremendous.  But a half second or so after you heard a car,
there is this buzzing ray gun type sound.  What the heck is that?  Do the
real live folks hear that or is it a microphone unable to process an echo or
some such after-note?

i heard and wondered as well-

considering some of the glitches with the mic's during the practices
break (posey's in pparticular) i got to believe the audio max's out at
a level of treble short of what the engines are putting out.. so you
hear a 'sound' its just not acurate :(

Hey, is the race being televised on ANY channel in the US on Sunday?
Speedvision wants to show it on Oct 7th.  WTF?

abc bought the rights to just that race in the F1 season.
should be on live
my tv guide lists it as 10:30am pacific daylight time.  So it should be
around 12:30 in Detroitland correct?  Is Michigan in the Central or Eastern
timezone??

It could be the transmition shifting, they are espically loud downshifting.
It is a popping sound, sometimes it is as loud as the engine. It could also
be the traction control working.

Nope it's not a popping mechanical sound.  That is fairly common at all
events.  But this bzzzzzerrrinnnng noise mimics the engine dopler but sounds
electronic rather than mechanical.
The only other place I hear even remotely similar sounds on the tube is
the Suzuka race.  Whomever mikes the cars there makes them sound like they
are in an echo chamber.

Rob,

After listening to those cars for three days in person, that is
the exact proper description of a modern F1 car running with
traction and launch control.  My sons say it it is just "new" but
I say it stinks!!!
