Yeah, I've tried that and a few other tweaks but with no great
improvement.
It's not just that GP2 is slow in dosbox but it's also seems out of
sync (sound+graphics) and is basically unplayable.
F1GP runs much better in comparison.

Well I have a widescreen lcd and I simply can't stand games that
stretch to fit the 16:10 aspect ratio so I think dosbox is my only
real option given I can run it in a window with normal aspect.
*My* LCD has options for this, at the least (Dell 2405 something), I can
choose 1:1, 4:3 or Fill so that graphic modes of less resolution than
the full display resolution is treated accordingly. In your case, you'd
choose 4:3 since you want your old game to be displayed as large as
possible.

If the game you are playing is a realmode game and not protected mode
then you will need to press Ctrl F11/F12 to slowdown/speedup DosBox.

> three 22" models that do. All LCD HDTV have it though so don't see why
