"What you likely didn't know was the licensed Starforce code buried
deep
within Vista/DX10 ;)
Mitch "

Just rereading a few posts and this point Mitch brought up really
caught my eye...any confirmation or elaboration ? I've read that
starforce permanently screws up ones cd/dvd reader and that was the
main objection to starforce

What's this about starforce in Vista ?

hehe.....Good one........ I am a beta tester with Vista and Starforce will
not even install on it. It is immediately disabled and you forever get this
warning that a driver has been disabled. This was with GTL and GTR. GTR2
installs and runs fine.... Just some info you might be interested in.

If you upgrade from XP to Vista, the driver is NOT disabled like you
describe AFAIK, least I never get any warnging when I drive the game...  (I
am speaking of GTL).

Of course NO ONE is actually going to do a dirty install upgrade from XP to
Vista.  Right?

Right?

Are you using the latest RC of Vista? Really won't matter after the second
beta. Starforce drivers are disabled at startup of Vista and GTL and GTR
will not run ................ won't even install correctly. GTR2 is fine.
During the first beta release I tested, Starforce drivers would install and
I could run GTR (GTL had not been released in the US yet) fine. When MS
added all the increased protection in Beta 2 of Vista, this changed. That
all is really moot since most game developers are going away from the
Starforce protection and moving to DVDs and implementing differnent copy
protection schemes. Vista RC2 is a completely different animal that the
Betas and RC1. I can install and run GTR2 just fine..........Not so with GTR
and GTL. As soon as Vista starts I get a warning that the Starforce driver
will not be allowed to run and is disabled. It may be just my
configuration..........but I doubt it.

There's a patch that fixes that.  Of course, it also means that you'll
have Starforce running. :)

well erm Uh, well....

I did, for the Beta, testing...

what can I say, I have upgraded 3 oses now in my lifetime, went 95 to 98,
then at some point reinstalled 98, then from 98 to XP Home, then reinstalled
home, then Home to Pro, then recently reinstalled Pro, then took the dead
"HOME" version which was just a partition back up, or clone drive, upgraded
thatto Vista RC1 for shics and grizzles...    Oh wait, that is 4 times.
hehehe

worst problem I have had was, Friggin XP and Sidewinder software...  if I
sat down and installed XP, up to SP2 'then" installed the wheel
drivers/software, I was screwed, but if I install XP and then install
driver/software for wheel everything works good.  Same with Vista, no way
sidewinder SW that most had trouble installing in XP w/SP2, upgraded to
Vista, and it works just fine!>??  go figure...

Ed I got one of the original 1000 people got to dowload RC1, that is when I
got the IMAGE and recently burned it to DVD, then upgraded XP (semi working
old PC that I migrated from) that had pre Vista install of GTL, GPL, NR03...
Now I have some ***issue that in XP, NR03 would load then crash clear back
to BIOS...

some information gleaned from google lead mention to possible that VIA 4n1
driver issue, it is a p4 3.ghz Abit motherboard...

FYI, so far, everything ran but NR03 with Vista RC1, but I have NOT tried to
install ANY other games I have either, so be that info you can use?  I
dunno.    se my other post to Larry about same date and time as this one...

questions?  sting32-at- gmail. c o m

GTR2 doesn't use Starforce and that is why it runs fine and GTR and GTL
don't.

I run Vista as a new install and did not do an upgrade install. I run it on
it's own partition and dual boot with XP. There could very well be a problem
with different system configurations too. In the Vista beta/RC forum there
are a lot of different gliches that seem to be following that theory. IMO,
Vista is not nearly ready to even have the label of RC yet. I have had
NR2003 running, albeit in compatibility mode and it ran terribly. GTR2 runs
smoothly, basically just like it does in XP for me. The only problems with
GTR2 is (I think) the ATI Vista drivers are not quite ready for prime time
as I get tearing and pixelization with sky and cloud textures. Sound drivers
are not good either but got XP drivers to work so-so.
