New CART Game

by Chie » Sun, 11 Apr 1999 04:00:00

There will be a new CART game coming to the US later this year.  The name of
the game is Super Speed Racing from Sega.  It features all of the tracks and
drivers of the 1998 schedule, minus Michael Andretti, *** and Tobacco
sponsors.  The catch is that it is for a game console.  I know how a lot in
RAS feel about this genre, but it is worth posting at least for
informational purposes.  Sega is releasing a new console here in the US in
September (EB and Babbages are taking pre-orders.  It is called the Sega
Dreamcast.  Sega is really making up for past mistakes as they have really
piled on the technology into this beast.  It is a 128-bit system, with a
built in 33.6 modem (US Version will have a 56k), four controller ports, Gig
per disk media type, featuring Windows CE as the OS.  I managed to get my
hands on an import version after selling my old 200mhz PC about two months
ago.  If anyone in this group ever played CART World Series or Gran Tourismo
for the Playstation, be prepared for a pleasant treat.  The gameplay is 100x
better than CART and the graphics make even Gran Tourimo look dull.  The
chassis are completely accurate with the F1 style wing on the road config
Penske and angled front wings on the superspeedway Reynard.  The game goes
as far as fully animated pit stops such as CPR and the driver having to use
"tear-away" visor plastic to clean your field of view.

Overall, again, I know how most of us feel about consoles, so I won't even
try to tell you this is the best CART game ever.  I will say that I have
played every CART/IRL game there is, and no one's graphics can even touch
this one.  The sim aspect certainly belongs still to Papy PC games and the
only console game that attempts to come as close is Gran Tourismo.

Anyhow, be out on the look for it in Sept.  It you cannot wait, e-mail me
and I can tell you where to get it.

As compared to 'todays' graphics etc. thats nothing to compare to.

God, I would just love to see a CART sim, a true sim, that was fresh and
current with full hardware support. Something that a true CART fan/sim fan
could sit back and say,"Wow!".

Some day..........

Hey, I am just calling it as I see 'em.  I didn't say it was better than a

Have you tried Papyrus ICR2/CART Racing in Rendition mode?  How
does it compare to that?

nothing to be frightened of, and no limit, any fool could get into
a motor car and racing would not exist as a sport." -- Jim Clark

Hmm let me guess some competition for Psygnosis's CART game for the worst

***y hell. Would somebody please bomb Sega America Headquarters so
that their evil plot for buying the rights to every important racing
event in America would be foiled. It's bad enough that the current F1
license is going to EA, what is there left for Papyrus (NASCAR)?

Sounds like the hype to NASCAR Revolution. Propably they will include
"Michigan" and the US500, but it will actually be an imaginary road
course. And the cars will of course be non-destructable.

Call me a sceptic, but ain't no good racin' sim coming from Sega!

Well I see the skeptics lining up.  Just remember, the DREAMCAST looks
to have more graphic whorsepower than a slew of sli'd Voodoo2s piped through
a PIII 500..  And yes it will probably be an ARCADE effort...but think of
this...Papyrus
has the rights AFTER Sega.  They will have the opportunity to craft
something
of their own.  Hopefully with the wonderfull GPL multiplayer and support for
many of the new cards.
(Note to Papyrus:  After dealing with V2k issues in the Rendition Cart
version
and hearing about the problems with GPL's openGl and TnT's.  Maybe it's time
to
bring a fulltime hardware guy onboard to plumb all the various Voodoo2/3,
TNT/2,
ATI RAGE stuff  BEFORE you release anymore products.}

True True.

Well, I can tell you I smelled NASCAR Rev a mile away.  Did you get had by
the EA PR bug?  All it is, is a port over from the N64/PSX code.  Like I
said, Super Speed Racing is a console game.  Therefore you should expect a
degree of "arcadeness".  Also, as I reported, all of the tracks from 1998 in
their expected configurations.  You can change the amount of damage you can
take, just like in ICR2.  I have tried full damage and it is what you
expect.....slight tap on the wall, and you're done.  No matter what degree
of setup knowledge you have of ICR2 or GPL, it does not carry over to this
game.  The amount of understeer is outrageous!!  As I said, the topic is
related to this newsgroup, but it still doesn't get better than current sims
on the market.

Luckily I live in a country where NASCAR is considered Redneck
Demolition Derby so the game hasn't even been imported here yet. Or at
least I haven't seen it anywhere.

SSR may exist; it's irrelevant to me since I'm not going to buy
ANYTHING from Sega. However, if it means that Papy or anyone cannot
make a real sim out of CART because they (Sega) buy the license for
ump*** years to make crappy sequels, then I wont stand it.

You're right, EA doesn't necessarily mean ***since they have huge
numbers of development teams working for them, but the odds of a
never-heard-of DT making a working Formula One sim while being
financially pressured by the corporate suits at EA is not very big.

Still waiting for that modern F1 sim from Papy. Hey why not?

Don't hold your breath.   Getting the license agreements from
Uncle Bernie at F1RULESTHEWORLD.COM will be very very expensive.
Now think...How much did Papyrus originally pay for the licenses for
the Truck addition to N99?   If they can't pony up for a 3rd tier league,
(ok 2nd tier on par with Busch Grand National) then I'm sure they
don't have enough cash to line Eccelstone's pockets for a modern
F1 sim.
Back on topic for a moment,...The Dreamcast and the CE enviroment.
This could be really really bad news...Just imagine having to have a
gamepad to run through the menu's, let alone driving.  Looking at most
console ports the developers have done absolutely the bare minimum to
get those things running on a PC.  With CE as a base, they will have to
do even less, so any mods to make a tilte PC friendly will be very limited.
