GPL: Brands Hatch?

by Ford Prefe » Tue, 02 Jun 1998 04:00:00

I was looking at a Grand Prix book (statistics) last night, and on the
back cover there's a picture of Jim Clark in his lotus at Brands
Hatch. The year is '66. Are Papy simply filling the gaps for Le-Mans
and Monaco with equivalent '66 circuits, or are they adding a couple
extra? Just wondered if there was any chance they would include
Brands.

Have they got the license for Silverstone yet??? In my view it would
be better if they didn't ever get it, so they would include Brands as
the brit GP in the sim instead.

Now *that*, would be awesome.

cheers

GPL: Brands Hatch?

The official word is that they HAVE ten(10) tracks currently licensed, and
Mike Lescault is "confident" that eleven tracks will ship when the game goes
gold. He give this answer when asked about the Monaco track..

I've been following the production of GPL for over a year now, and Brands
Hatch WAS mentioned a long ways back as the track for the "European GP".
AFAIK, Silverstone has never "officially" been quoted as being signed (it is
just assumed that it was one of the ten tracks), but WAS included in the
"67season.ini" file included with the demo (but then again, so was the
Nurburgring BEFORE it was officially signed. The two question marks were
always Silverstone and Monaco, and Brands hadn't entered the picture at all
recently..

What about this.. if Monaco ISN'T secured, and Papy still wants to go with
11 tracks, how about giving us both Brands and Silverstone (assuming they
can get both licensed)?? That would be good.

So, my feeling is that Silverstone is *almost definitely* in, as Brands
hasn't been mentioned for a while... But then again, Papy might surprise us.

How about Moncaco, Silverstone AND Brands.. now that would be a treat!!

The 1967 British Grand Prix was held at Silverstone....not Brands Hatch.
Mike Lescault has stated that the circuits included in the sim are
representative of the 1967 season *with the exception of France*.

The French GP in '67 was run on the Le Mans-Bugatti circuit....which a
young-ish Jack Brabham immediately termed a "Micky Mouse
circuit".....hence the term.
Papyrus have seen fit to drop this *** and replace it with
Rouen....a more enjoyable track.
This is the only deviation (so far) from what was used in 1967.  Mike
has stated that 11 different tracks will be in the sim (the number that
made up the WC in 1967) and that they are still hopeful of obtaining the
rights to Monaco.

I'll take Brands Hatch over Silverstone any day.
Donington would also be nice and is a suitably 'historic' circuit.
Same goes for Goodwood.

GPL: Brands Hatch?

I remember driving around the Brands Hatch  in Revs (yes, that ancient
driving sim made by Geoff Crammond), and this is truly a racers circuit,
in comparison to Brands, Silverstone is flat, wide, boring because of the
flat nature (no off camber no hills no nothing). Brands is full of
elevation, off camber (Paddocks Bend for instance) and curves going
narrower (The sharp left after the hairpin - isn't it called druids?)...
And what about that Hawthorns bend? I remember this bend with awe and
terror, imagine, that old racing sim managed to transfer that feeling
despite horrendous graphics and sound...

I would trade Brands Hatch for Silverstone any time!!!

eigthties!!!)

I would like them both.  Brands is great for the very reaons you state,
but Silverstone is a wonderful course (in it's older configuration) for
going flat out.  Also it is one of the few tracks that I have ever been
able to "master" (Speccy days and Accolade's Grand Prix Circuit).  It's
always nice to have a track were one does well.

GPL: Brands Hatch?

My favourite circuit is now Watkins Glen.  I know The Glen better than I
know my own backyard.  I could drive around The Glen blindfolded and
backwards. I am on first-name terms with all the maintenance staff, the
caterers, the bloke who drives the fuel tanker, the people who live down
the gully and raise dairy cows and even all the visitors.
When GPL is finally released I am setting up my garage at
Watkins-frickin-Glen and will do all my race testing at
Watkins-***y-Glen.  I will rarely venture outside the gates of
Watkins-effing-***y-Glen because I'll be shit scared of all the other
circuits that I haven't driven on.
But I'll be safe at The Glen........jeeeeezuzzz, I need this sim to be
released very, very soon otherwise the white-coted fellows will be here
soon!
