OT: How to Dual Boot?

by bertr » Sat, 26 Apr 2003 10:04:54

Hi Guys,

Sorry for the OT Post.  I know that I've read here that a number of you
have Dual Boot (Multiple OS) systems.  I will shortly be making the jump
to WinXP Pro, and I plan to slowly wade in rather than dive in.  I run
in a GPL League and I want to make sure everything is working at 110%
before running it under XP.

What I plan to do is keep my present hard drive with Win98SE on it, and
run it when simming (at least at first), and put WinXP Pro on a spanking
new hard drive and slowly install my system drivers, apps, and sims
there.  That way, I have the best of both worlds and can slowly port
things over.  The goal is to eventually re-format the Win98SE drive and
use it as a second hard drive under XP.

My question is, exactly how do you set-up a dual boot system?  Is there
something built in to XP or do I need some 3rd party software.  Any info
on this would be greatly appreciated.

In case it matters, my system is an Athlon XP2100 (overclocked) w/512
Megs RAM, Radeon 9700Pro videocard (also overclocked) , SBLive
soundcard, Mobo = Epox 8Kha+.

Thanks!
Bert

As long as you install XP on a different drive or a different partition, XP
will set it all up for you.  Once you get XP installed you will get a prompt
asking you what OS you want to boot to.  When you attempt to install XP, do
not do an upgrade but do a full install on the partition that is other than
the one your present OS is on.

With only one drive or partition, your only option is to upgrade to XP or do
a full install, the latter of which will wipe your hard drive clean before
it installs XP.

It is not possible to have a dual boot with only one drive or partition.

If you have only one drive, you can use something like Partition Magic to
partition your drive into two partitions, for example.  Then you can install
XP on one partition while keeping another OS on another.

Just wondering: will this work if I have linux installed on the
same machine, too?

Cheers,

xp won't recognize your linux partition.
you will have to reinstall your boot-manager after a windows install.
or keep it on a floppy, so you're fine.

You could also let the windows boot manager start up lilo. Put lilo on
the linux partition and not the MBR. Create a file image of the boot
sector on the partition and copy that to the windows partition. Put a
reference to this in the boot.ini file.

Thx for the reply, Alan.  However, I do need something clarified.  I'm getting
the XPPro Upgrade (Got a great price thru the educational package....)  So, On
my brand new hard drive, I plan to install Win98SE and then immediately install
the XPPro upgrade.  On my original drive, which will be the second physical
drive on the system, I will still have Win98SE.  In other words what is now my
main drive will end up being my second drive (as is) on my system.

Will this work?  ....and Why do you warn me to not do an upgrade to XP on the
drive that is other than the one my present OS is on?  (In other words, the new
drive.)

Thx,
Bert

Upgrade does not mean you HAVE to upgrade over an existing OS, you just have to let it verify that
you have the product required to buy the upgrade version.  It is usually just a matter of inserting
your preivous OS install CD so it can verify you are eligible for the upgrade.  That way you get a
clean install.
