For a 9 year old?

Hi,

I'm giving my p2 400 mhz pc (win98se) to my 9 year old son Mike and
would like to get him a racing simulator game and wheel. This would be
like a starter kit, so an expensive force feedback wheel would be
expensive overkill. I'd appreciate any advice on a wheel that would
make sense for Mike along with a game that would challenge him, but
not be too advanced for a nine year old to play.

My son is 11 and uses a Thrustmaster nascar pro (one of my old wheels), I
think you can get something like this cheap now.  Also, son's favorite games
are Viper racing and Dirt track racing (the original), and Leadfoot.

Hope this helps,
Rick Miller

For the wheel, a durable MS Sidewinder FF, which comes packaged with a
couple of driving games, so that's saved a bit of time. For a not-too-hard
game, but great fun....Colin McRae 2?

John,

Need4Speed is good (the earlier ones--like High Stakes or Hot Pursuit--are
easier than Porsche Unleashed).

Don't get him  GPL (or even F1 2001) unless he's praternaturally focused,
patient, persistant, and *really* into auto racing.  Certainly not Superbike
2001 (very, very hard) unless he's a bike freak.  Motocross Madness is good,
if he likes that sort of thing.  Midtown Madness is kinda dim-bulb for a
9-yr-old..

Dirt Track racing and its ilk are also good, as are N4 (or, easier, NASCAR
Heat) if he likes stockcars.  I like Rally Championship Xtreme, too, but I'm
famously wierd.

Avoid Motor City Online like the plague.

John,

If you're in the US and interested in a FF wheel for your son, I have an
essentially new (used one time, didn't care for FF) Logitech Formula Force
GP in its original box that I was about to put up on Ebay.
http://www.logitech.com/cf/products/productfeatures.cfm/70

New, they're $100. Cheapest on pricewatch.com is $75, I would take $40 plus
shipping from Calif.

Let me know if you're interested.

Nascar Racing 99 could also be found cheap, and it would work (offline mode
only) with todays Digital Wheels.

Nascar Racing 2 is a problem due to the custom Papy driver that will not
work with digital wheels.

Viper Racing and Sports Car GT are good one's, and they are generally in the
$10 bin these days due to their age.

Viper Racing is particularly good as it can be as easy or as hard as you
want it to be.

Both have championship modes where you race, win earn, update car, race,
win, earn, update car, etc...

When I was 9 I remember playing GP2. Ah, those were the days...

I got Viper Racing for my 11th b-day, and advanced through it quite quickly.
I think Viper Racing is your best bet, great sim.

Thanks,
Alex

Nascar Racing 3, Dirt track racing and Viper Racing sound like good
starting points. As for the wheel, I'm sure you can pick an affordable
Thrustmaster wheel (Nascar Pro?).

My old Thrustmaster T2 was a great non-FF wheel, very sturdy and well built
with heavy duty pedals and wheel, perfect for a 9 year old to yank around
and beat on, but I doubt you'd be able to find it for sale any longer, at
least not new, perhaps on e-bay, or here at RAS or heck I'd even be willing
to part with mine for a reasonable price.

However if your looking for a force feedback wheel and are in the market for
something new,  I'd suggest the MS FF wheel, as it's pretty sturdy and has
been around long enough that you can find one for around $60 and would
probably come with a game or two. Or check out this site
http://gamespot.com/gshw/filters/0,12822,6018763,00.html for a review of
wheels. The best Force feedback wheels cost in excess of $120 these days.

As for games, the Need for Speed series is great, especially the older high
stakes one which I believe is now an EA Classics game and can be found for
around $12, NASCAR Heat is also a great game and again, can be found in the
bargain bin's as it's replacement Heat 2002 is on the way.

Colin McRae Rally 1 or 2 is a great game that isn't too tough and very
intertaining. Likewise Viper racing, ToCA and SCGT are fun and yet more
realistic "sims".

There really isn't any "easy" F1 or Indycar games, they are all much more
sophisticated for a 9 year old, but F1 2000 CS can be found inthe bargain
bins these days for cheep and will ALL driving aids turned on shouldn't be
too difficult to learn.

Another fun arcade game that he'd like is ReVolt, it's a game where you
drive remote control cars around and can shoot pop-bottle rockets and water
balloons at the other cars, loads of fun for a 9 year old.

Hope these suggestions help!
Happy Holidays
JJ

When I was 9 years old all there was were pinball games, (the mechanical
kind) and slot machines, mostly in bars. Which none of were in the town that
I grew up in. :-)

I'm not sure about a good low-end wheel.  Avoid the cheap Staples / Wall
Mart junk.  The low end Logitech wheel might me acceptable, althought
the pedals are perhaps (?) bit crude for a high end (needs precice
throttle control) sim.  Here's an outfit selling them for 17$:

For a bit more money, try Act Labs' non-force wheel (
http://www.act-labs.com/race2.htm ) or one of the Billy$oft offerings.

http://eaglewoman.simracing.dk/gpl/faq-hw.htm#controls has a slightly
dated rundown on several wheel/pedal offerings.

As for games, aside from those already suggested, look for the $10
"Ultimate Motorcycle" package from EA.  It has two solid sims, Moto
Racer2 and Superbike WC, as well as the sim-game Road Rash!   Even with
it's dated graphics and non-existent physics modeling, RR has got to be
the best "simple fun" racing game in existence!   Any 9 year old boy
will get a great kick out of it.  :)
