ICR3: what happend to it?

by Jenera » Sat, 17 Jun 2000 04:00:00

I remember a couple years back, Papyrus announced they were going to make
another Indycar(CART) sim AFTER Nascar 3 came out. Can anyone fill me in if
this is still ongoing or why it has been cancelled? I recently pulled out
ICR2 and ran my converted version of Indianapolis and it reminded me of how
well this game plays on the ovals. AI is still a bit challenged but compared
to other attempts (MS: CPR and that IRL game) it is brilliant. CPR could've
been a great game. The graphics engine was decent, the sound was awesome
(loved the rev limiter) but the AI was atrocious! AI cars on ovals would
slow down to a crawl on the straights to allow you to lap them! That was the
most incomplete game I ever bought! Shame on Microsoft and Terminal Reality
for not releasing a finished product. The patch made it better, but only
marginally.
I've tried to like Nascar (I own Nascar, Nascar 2, and Nascar 99) but it's
not the same. I'm really looking forward to GP3 but I still like running the
ovals and since I don't own a Rendition (few do nowadays) card, the software
mode is looking a little dated. Although, some nice car sets with new car
shapes I downloaded are quite an improvement. Kudos to the fellow(s) who put
in all the hard work!!
Sorry for all the ranting. I'm still curious about my original question.

Thanks,

Michael M

ICR3: what happend to it?

ICR3 is dead.  I would be one of the most suprised people on Earth if
Papyrus announced another CART product.  Last I heard Midway had the
license from CART and planned an ARCADE type product.  The recently
announced Indy 500 sim from GT Interactive has only surfaced as a N64
cartridge...the PC version has been cancelled.  Sims modeling American
open wheel racing are in short supply these days...although YMenard has
claimed Ubi soft will be putting out a CART package, probably based on
a  reworked MCRSF1 engine. with another all new engine due out next
year.  Thats about all I know right now...

The short answer: never

The long answer: maybe never

It is a real shame too.
