F1GP (1.05) Link play: help!

I was trying to play via modem with a friend of mine and we couldn't play.
The modems connected fine with no error-correction and no data-compression
at 4800 and 9600. But whenever we got on the starting grid (from a head to
head quick race or a non-champ race) at the top of the screen was a red stripe
with the message in white (link data mismatch, press escape to repair).

I tried calling him, he tried calling me, we tried 10fps on both computers
%occupency nerver got over 50% while in***pit...

Is there something we can do about this (other than forget about link play)?

Setup:
Pentium 120, 75
Modems: 14.4k 28.8k

This is because there are differences in your GP.EXE file.  This file
must match exactly or you will get that error.  That means if you are
using an editor then both of you must have everything set EXACTLY the
same.

You may wish to try copying the GP.EXE file from one computer to the
other.

Not correct, according to my experience. I had "link data mismatches"
with two copies of the same GP.exe as well as with an English and a
German version on the two computers.

My advice for null modem play: Make sure the cable does not run
parallel to power wires, as this might result in induced electricity
garbling the data. Don't use a cable that's too long. Try slower
transfer rates. Try to connect the cable to a different com port.

Hope this helps.
