Will the origional "Indianapolis 500: The Simulation" game work?  NO
Will ICR1 work?  NO
Will the ICR1 Track pack work?  NO
Will the add on to ICR1 called "Indianapolis Motor Speedway Expansion
track for IndyCar Racing" work?   YES, but only after using a utility
Will ICR2 work?  NO
Will "brickyrd.zip" work?  YES, but it is illegal

Can you buy "Indianapolis Motor Speedway Expansion track for IndyCar
Racing" anywhere?  NO, most stores never carried it, and even Papyrus
does not have it in stock.  When they do get it in stock, they will
sell it to you for $19.95.  Their number is 1-800-836-1829

Please have someone that has all of these games confirm what I have
guessed at above.

I am reposting this information for further clarification.

One person has confirmed that all of the above is correct.
One person has informed me via e-mail that I have to buy ICR1 and
"Indianapolis Motor Speedway Expansion track for IndyCar Racing"  in
order to use the utility to convert this track to NASCAR.

Thanks in advance for some clarification on this confusing subject.

You ONLY have to buy the track pack if you are going to run Indy on either
ICR2 or NASCAR.  You do *NOT* have to buy ICR1 (the game) at all.  Gerhard
SPECIFICAlLY put that in the conversion utility README.

Not true.

If you simply make a directory called C:\INDYCAR\TRACKS\INDY and copy
the INDY.EXE file from the Painkit Disk into it, run it to extract the
data. The converter will then work.

You will have propblems installing the track if you don't have the
original ICR1, but using the above method gets around it.

correct

The first person is right, the second person is wrong.

For people who have trouble accessing the pits (either here or UK, I have
the conversion utility stuff on my webpage too:

I bought both (stupid me!), did the conversion, and deleted the \INDYCAR
directory (actually, I ran ICR1 once, got mad when it asked for a word from the
manual, and then deleted the whole directory tree).  When V2 of the converter
came out, I figured out how to just install the track (because where there
is a V2, there may be a V3, right Jed?).

You can run the supplied installation program after you manually create
\INDYCAR\TRACKS on your drive of choice.

Just say no to the install 1.05 and the paintkit if you want to save some
space.

I doubt it, nless there is some other way we can improve things.

We're too busy with other things like cracking track formats and
writing other handy utils! ;-)
