I was listening to talk radio on this the day after the WTT attack.  Lots
of outraged callers, lots of touchy feely types that thought retaliation
would lower ourselves to their level.  BUT ONE WOMAN STOLE THE SHOW.  I
would guess by the sound of her voice she was somewhere in the 40's to 50's
range in age.  Thats just a guess tho...but here is what she called in
for...

This local woman (Spokane Washington in the upper NW corner of the USA)
called in a Radio talk show and complained that all her SOAP OPERA TV shows
were being interupted by the continuing coverage of the disaster.
The host was flabbergasted and gave her a chance to pull back , he asked
her if she didn't care that maybe 30,000 Americans could be buried in the
rubble of the WTT.  "Don't you care about them?" he asked....
She paused a moment and then said...
  'Well...No I don't'
The radio host promptly cut her off and shut her off.
We Americans can be a strange lot.

Hopefully this is simply someone who really wanted to hear her voice
on the radio and thought of the most outrageous thing that she could
in order to do so. It is unimaginable to me that a fellow human being
could actually feel this way at a time like this. I prefer to think
that it is simply not possible (no matter how closed minded and
misguided that notion might be.)

I wonder how'd she feel if one of her family members were inside one of
the two WT Buildings?

I feel the same way as her.
People die every day from horrible things in the world.
There is no difference between the hundreds of
people that got ***ed from Tuesdays happenings to the hundreds
of people that got ***ed the day before. People are getting killed
in other countrys all the time, yet nobody cares much if at all when
they hear about it, if they hear about it at all.

in the same vein, there are probably folks ***ing right now about
cancelling their upcoming visits to the towers.

i'm not surprised at the diverse reaction of people.  i don't think
anybody was able to think coherently for a while after the event and
many attempts to deal with it came across as being callous or
inhumane.  However, some of them genuinely came from crass and
ignorant folk.

as an example, i logged on to my local isp's home page as CNN.com was
being hammered.

they had an opinion poll up.  it went something like this.

New Yorks twin towers of the World Trade Centre have both been hit by
passenger planes.  Do you think it is?

a) A freak accident
b) Terrorist attack
c) Ploy by US Dept of Defence for more budget funding

I was disgusted and voiced my anger on the comment page along with
many others.  About an hour later, the poll was altered, all
criticisms were removed and no apology was issued.

Enough people though had seen this and were pissed off enough to cause
major shit for the guy who created the poll.  Serves him right.

I'm still struggling with the event itself and I can't believe some of
the reactions.  And then I am supposed to reassure my daughters fears
now...

Regards all,
istoff

In my local newspaper today, they went to the local university and asked
some students the question "How do you feel about the attacks on
America?" One of our brightest commented "I don't care much. Hopefully
it should roll over like anything else." Thankfully, the other nine
students who's responses were published indicated that they felt
SOMETHING about the tragedy. Maybe there is some hope for the future.

I'm not sure when the last time 10,000-30,000 people died in such a high profile
event but the media is beating us to death with it.  I admit I was glued to the
set for most of Tues and even a few hours today but I'm curious as to "when is
enough enough".

Sure this whole thing is tragic but the news seems to be determined to force
those images down our throat for the past 48 hours.  I'm not fortunate enough to
have cable so I have 6 channels of LIVE coverage.   And the real problem is that
there is nothing NEW to report.  They keep rehashing the same ***over and over
as an excuse to loop the video in the corner of the screen.  Thank God UPN and
WB finally resumed normal programming so I can find something to laugh at again
after 2 days of not even being able to smile.

Healing can't begin until normal life is restored.  The fact that MLB has
cancelled their games and Big Ten has cancelled weekend football just gives MORE
power to the terrorists.  Everything that US citizens are forced to give up (no
matter how trivial) is something the terrorist can add to their victory list.
The depths this event is reaching is amazing.  Upcoming video games are being
edited, movies are being edited, delayed (possibly cancelled).

This Sunday ID4 and PeaceMaker were supposed to be on network TV.  Both replaced
with "feel good" movies so we don't upset anyone or see another NY skyscraper
get blasted.  Seem kind of ironic.  After 4 days of watching the WTC crumble to
the ground everyone should be plenty desensitized to falling buildings
regardless of if it was aliens or terrorists.

America seems very obsessive and determined to wallow in misery.  Give some
*** - go to a candlelight prayer service then MOVE ON with our lives despite
all the attempts to cancel life's other activities that might get our minds off
this tragedy.  As long as we our forced to give up life's everyday pleasures and
constantly be reminded of Tuesday's events by every media outlet the terrorists
keep winning - even the dead ones.

The one part of your reply that is halfway reasonable is your
implication that the US media is (with a few honourable exceptions)
very insular compared to the press here in Europe, and that's
undoubtedly true.

*However*... I think this *is* different to anything else. This is the
single biggest terrorist attack *ever*. It is the biggest one-day loss
of life on US soil since Antietam in 1862. It is the first *ever*
large-scale attack on a NATO country, which has lead to the first
*ever* implementation of Article Five[1]. This means in effect that,
declared or not, every country in NATO is now at war.

[1] which says that an attack on one member state is to be considered
as an attack on all.

David,

Now this is an interesting fact.  Did you actually know
this yourself, or did you hear it someplace?  I only
ask because in all the media coverage so far in the U.S.,
I've never heard it mentioned.

Unfortunately, this is probably because most U.S. citizens
(and media idiots, for that matter), will have no idea
what Anteitam means.

For those who aren't familiar with Antietam:

"The Battle of Antietam (or Sharpsburg) on September 17, 1862,
climaxed the first of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's two attempts to
carry the war into the North. About 40,000 Southerners were pitted
against the 87,000-man Federal Army of the Potomac under Gen. George
B. McClellan. And when the fighting ended, the course of the American
Civil War had been greatly altered.

"More men were killed or wounded at Antietam on September 17, 1862,
than on any other single day of the Civil War. Federal losses were
12,410, Confederate losses 10,700. Although neither side gained a
decisive victory, Lee's failure to carry the war effort effectively
into the North caused Great Britain to postpone recognition of the
Confederate government. The battle also gave President Abraham Lincoln
the opportunity to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, which, on
January 1, 1863, declared free all slaves in States still in rebellion
against the United States. Now the war had a dual purpose: to preserve
the Union and end slavery."
