European On-Line League??

European On-Line League??

by Scott Rixo » Mon, 07 Dec 1998 04:00:00

Is there a European on-line league?? I've seen quite a few US ones but they
are all at difficult times. Any one out there found one, or want to start
one? Someone with a fast ISDN would be useful.

On the subject of fast links, anyone tried using BT Highway in the UK?
What's it really like?

Cheers,

Scott

I would also like to join a European league.  But with my 56k Modem I
couldn't host :(

Hope someone starts one up.

European On-Line League??

I'm hoping to find the time soon to arrange one but I can't host with my
P200 / 33.6 combo...! So if there are any ISDN-equipped volunteers maybe
it will be on the horizon.

Cheers!

European On-Line League??

I'd quite happily run a little web site for a UK or European league, but
again I need someone with a decent connection to host.

Someone must work from home with a serious connection & love GPL?

European On-Line League??

It's a real shame, but the UK (and Europe as well I believe) is seriously short of cable
modems and ADSL connections (in fact I think there are none at all in the UK outside
limited beta testing, some of which I know have been withdrawn after trials). ISDN's
ok, but it's not really up to more than five or six (?) players max with any kind of
reliability.

So maybe we should be thinking of working around this with a bit of lateral thought.

Ok, someone clever have a good idea then! Go on, I'm waiting ;-)

I offer this...

(1) Choose a race style/distance... eg semi-pro, 17 lapper
(2) Everyone racing with turn up to various heats of three or four drivers.
(3) Measure everyone's time to complete the distance, no matter which heat they
compete in. (Advantage of this being that even drivers outclassed in their race have
every reason to drive their socks off, as they're also competing with people in other
heats).
(4) Either use these times to determine overall points/winner *or* (preferable I think)...
(5) Use the results of the heats to group people ready for the real races. Top four race
for the top four positions, next four for 4-8, etc.

It might be better to use novice racing to allow shift-r's, and collating the results might
be fun for someone. But it'd be worth persevering with.

Right, that's my thinking so far. Might inspire someone else to have better thoughts :-)

European On-Line League??

Well, if someone else wants to do the web site, I am willing to host. I have
ISDN64K and will move to cable soon.
The ISDN will allow 5 car races with the usual core.ini settings, or 7
car races if connection quality allows us to send less server data (see
www.xsall.nl/~westrab/gplol.htm for details; a test would be needed to
confirm this works).
My system is Celeron450A/Viper550/128MB.

Good times would be saturday or sunday morning/afternoon but we can try
other times as well. I cannot host on sunday evenings.

Contact me by email to sort out the details.

The Paddock is hosting The Intercontinental Grand Prix Legends Championship.
We got driver from both Europe and North America.

All races are run on Sundays at 6:00 or 7:00pm GMT, whilch I belive suit
most drivers.
Although we are 3 races into the season now... there's still a *few*
openings if you feel like joining.... better hurry though, as we're racing
at Spa on sunday. :)

The IGPLC boost almost 60 drivers now, with people from Finland to
California - Norway to Florida competing!

Check out The Paddock for more info..

All the best,
Edwin Solheim
