GPL on a TNT2Ultra in Win ME

GPL on a TNT2Ultra in Win ME

by Ian Jarvi » Tue, 01 Jan 2002 09:49:08

Hi,

I've got a fairly old setup which has been okay for GPL.

Its a Pentium II 350 clocked to 400mhz , 128mb ram & a TNT2 Ultra with 32mb.
This all worked pretty well in hi-res for GPL / Quake III , Unreal
Tournament etc etc

I recently opted to install Win ME, but things went backward. I've got
Directx8.1 plus detonator 23.11 installed , but GPL has started to run quite
poorly. When launched into the pitlane , the movement is very 'blocky /
jolty ( can't think of a better expression ! ) However this slowly erodes
and after one lap its nearly okay. However because of the initial slow
framerates , I can't get a clean start at VROC.

I know some options are available i.e go back to Win98 , or upgrade my PC
( which hopefully may happen soon ), but I was hoping this is a common
problem and you guys have all the answers............

Please help

Chances are its video and/or sound card driver related.  Thats a pretty slow system for what you
want, I think since it was running fine under 98, I would have left well enough alone until an
equipment upgrade was possible.

I would try changing back your video card drivers.  I don't think that WinME
is the problem here.  I have had troubles with detonator drives as well.
Hope this helps Daryll

........I've not done anything with the soundcard. Its a soundblaster awe64.
I'll play with that because I've never even tryed new drivers.

The reason I don't think its hardware related is because the problem fades
away after a minute or so ( a bit like a car with damp ignition.....it may
start on 3 cylinders but runs on all 4 when warmed up ........Hey thats' it
, I'll spray some 'Dampstart' into the back of my PC ! )

I thought the real problem was either driver related , or Win ME putting
more demands on my system . If the latter , I'd like to know what the
minimum number of critical app's should be resident and working to play GPL
, i.e when I view the task manager.

Ian,

The 23.xx Detonators are geared more for the GF3 than the GF2.  I've had
good luck w. nVidia's 7.52 drivers.  Old doesn't neccessarily mean slow.

I'm running GPL in WinME, 192 MEG, Voodoo3 2000. I sometimes get a few stuttered
frames very early in a session and then goes away. 128 MEG might be marginal on
RAM with ME, and it takes a while to reallocate memory for GPL. You can never be
too rich or have too much memory. Good luck.

GPL on a TNT2Ultra in Win ME

Looking at other newsgroups and some game related, many are
Hardware/software related...  I have overwhelming evidence the ME is the
biggest joke and problem since windows3.  The biggest problem is many
drivers that work in SE or pre SE don't run in ME.  Many MFG's went belly up
before ME drivers ever got up to running very good.  Also with ME, the OS
seems less likely to do what I want it to install on drivers vs. what "IT"
thinks is best idea...  Example updating video card drivers to the latest
reference drivers from NVIDIA.  OS always says "the existing drivers are a
closer match .... ETC".

If I were you, Id go back to SE...  or maybe XP?

I'd try the nVidia 6.50 drivers. Remove the 23.11 drivers using NVCleaner or
Detonator Destroyer and install the 6.50 drivers, then try these values in your
core.ini: I recently went to a TNT 2 from my Voodoo 2s and was given this info
by a helping hand at Legends Central. Worked great in 98. Give it a try. Don't
forget to back up your core.ini first...
