Laguna Seca - Corkscrew

I'd like some advice on how people negotiate the Corkscrew.  When do you start
braking?  What sort of speed do you carry through the left hander?  I'm having
all sorts of trouble.  Either I lose it under braking, as there is a slight bend
to the braking zone, or I go way too deep to make the left.  The third scenario is
overcooking it coming out and spinning at the bottom of the hill.

(Stephen Ferguson) says:

I start braking at the 2 (or is it 3?) marker cresting the hill to the
flat straight right before the corkscrew.  I am usually near 150mph at
this time.  I try to adjust my exact brake point based on the condition
of the tires, fuel load and wind direction.  A good general rule is to
brake as soon as you crest the hill.  This may be early but you can
adjust from there.  I usually brake toward the left side of the road.
When I reach the corner I am at 44-45 mph.  A twitch to the left, then
right, then *** the gas.  If the car is pretty much straight all is
well.  Sometimes the back will start to break loose, in which case you
back off, wait til the car is straight and gun it again.  Or if you are
in a tight fight with somebody, you can try to correct the back end with
gentle front-end steering (and pray....)

If I am out of position on the turn in (in the middle or to the right of
the road), then my left turn in is usually longer, after the left I apply
gentle throttle until the right is completed.  As I am going through the
corner in these circumstances I usually accelerate up toward 60 mph.  In
this situation you have to wait until the car is perfectly straight
before giving it full throttle or you will spin at the bottom (as you
have experienced!).  By "accelerate" above, I mean off and on the
throttle in very short bursts to get the speed up.  I don't have an
analog throttle.

Hope this helps!   Tom.

This is the corner that really proved how good the Thrustmaster T-1 was.
Subjectively and by crudely comparing replays with a stop watch, I am
faster through here.  I prefer to be just a little left of center at the
crest.  My turn in to the quick left is made with trailing throttle and,
with good tires, I can actually counter steer if it starts to get lose
under throttle.  Not pretty or fast but better than losing it into the
Aramco. Also, I can feather the trottle with the pedal.

It's quite some time since I last played ICR but here goes.

Your approach the 'screw uphill so you can't see the 1st rightturn. Your
have to know when to start turning. I turn quite early so I approach the
tight leftturn with the car at the right side of the road.

Now the braking bit. As always I break and turn (slightly) so that my speed
is 45-50 at the apex.

Next up is the tight downhill rightturn. I accellerate (very) moderately thru
the turn getting the speed up to 'round 75 at the exit. Its a must to
hug the apex or you'll go sliding all over the place. Then full throttle
ASAP and you are flyin'

As I recall I actually gained more time learning the next two turns.
The long leftturn is taken with full throttle and hardly any sliding.
Be sure not to hit the apex to soon. This will keep the speed up and
allow you to get into 6th goin' downhill towards the tight rightturn.

This turn is where I gained the most. I don't use the brakes at all.
As the turn approaches I'm at the left side (of course :). As I start
turning right I quickly downshift into 4th and maintain full throttle.
This makes the car slide sort of sideways thru the turn and somewhat
onto the pit entrance track, but you have contact all along. It makes
you approach the final leftturn at a disturbing rate, but I guess thats
what you want :-)

I haven't spent much time tankering with the car setup. I used a
standard ACE car with a little less wing. Got 1.06.941.

Only my $0.02

Cheers,

Kenneth
