OT: Holiday Shopping... Madness!!!

I know that the day after Thanksgiving is traditionaly the busiest shopping
day of the year, but for crying out loud!

I went to Best Buy this morning at 11am (thought I'd be early) to pick up a
particular gift for my Mom that was on sale, and had an extra 'freebie' that
made it worth going to BB to get it.

What I witnessed was pure madness.

At 11am there were IN EXCESS of 200 people in line for CHECKOUT!  That's
where I stopped counting.  There could very well have been in excess of 300.

I have never witnessed anything like this in my life.  All the registers
were open, so can't have any complaints there.

The line started at the register, and wrapped around the ENTIRE perimiter of
the inside of the store along the outer-most walls.

There were no carts (duh), and people were standing in line with 100+ pound
televisions in their arms, along with just about everything else.

At this point I left (without my purchase, of course), and decided to do
some research online, and I've noticed a couple of trends:

1.  Shipping charges are being artificially inflated industry-wide.  All the
big 'stores' are doing it.
2.  The cost of Ink Jet Cartridges and paper supplies, especially photo
paper, are higher than I've seen all year.

I'm disgusted.  Time to do some racing and forget all of this for the rest
of the day :)

Next year, I'm shopping in August :)

I never thought the purchase of a Seal-A-Meal would lead to such a
frustrating day LOL!

You just described the experience I had at Best Buy the same day last year,
except I got there at...7am.  Checkout lines that went all the way around to
the back of the store, and every parking lot of every store in the area
overflowing.  Turned around immediately and got the heck out of shopping
hell (or heaven, no doubt, for those who'd been camped out outside the
stores since 4am waiting for them to open).  Thank goodness for online
shopping! ;-)

My daughter got up a 5:15am this morning to go wait in line.  Nuts I say :)

She did get some dang good deals though.  A 3.2MP Kodak digi/cam for $90.
Exec office chair $19.  DVD Player for $29.

Why the hell would *anybody* go shopping on the day after Thanksgiving?!?  I'm
thinking that those who do must just enjoy endless numbers of carbon-units
fighting for space.  And people actually CAMP OUT?  For a store...?  That's
damn stupid - the same shit will be onsale next week, and the lemmings will
have already made their purchases.  I'll be able to go in and not run into any
more people than any other time during the year.  But hey, if you like 2-legged
traffic jams, more power to you.

Not at all...

I only went because of the sale they had on one particular item, and I just
wanted to get it before they were gone.

It turns out that, breaking tradition, Best Buy started a NEW sale today,
and the old one ended yesterday, along with the special price on what I was
after.  Normally their sales go Sunday to Saturday.

Damn...

Sometimes you can get some good deals

Last year I went to Officemax on the day after Thanksgiving. I was the first
in line, but the store opened at 9am and I only got there 30 min in advance.

Got myself a Pioneer A05 DVD Burner for $70.   I feel like that 30 min wait
was worth saving that much money

I did do Best Buy after Thankgiving once, that was pure chaos and I am not
sure I would ever do that again.  Officemax was no problem at all because
everyone was still at Best Buy :)

Yeah, it was pretty insane.  I was there trying to pick up a half-price
video card at around opening time before going to work.  As an anti-shopper,
I pretty much knew it would be busy, but didn't really have a clue what I
was getting into.  Quite a scene seeing all those people in a frenzy of
consumption; one they'd planned for and long-anticipated .  I took it as a
brief glimpse into a parallel universe... ;-)

I just did some shopping this morning.  4 different stores in 3 different
locations.
Target - in and out in 15 minutes
Best Buy - 15 or 20 minutes
Game Stop and K*B toys - 20 minutes
No lines in any of the places(except 2 or 3 minutes at Best Buy) - the time was
spent deliberating on what to purchase.

I did all that, PLUS travel, PLUS stopping at McDonald's for breakfast, in less
that 2 hours.  And, I got a couple of language programs at Best Buy for free!
They were $9.99 each, with a $10 rebate...<g>

I don't think you'll EVER catch me in a store the day after Thanksgiving,
unless I *own* it. :-)

That's what gets me.  People KNOW it's the busiest shopping day in the year,
it's hyped for all of November.  It gets worse every year.  Yet they insist on
going, then act surprised that so many people are out, and have a miserable
experience.
Hell, even if a store was giving away the Seal-A-Meal for *free*, I wouldn't
stand in line for 4 hours to get it...

You won't get the deals a week later that you will get the day after though.
Last year I got my brother, dad, and a friend to goto Best Buy early, and
they walked out with 3 complete 2.0GHZ systems WITH a 15" LCD for $250.
Find that anywhere, anytime else.  Is it worth it to wait a couple hours?  I
think so.  But if you can afford to waste money, then by all means.

Wow, you mean you paid $84 each?  This time last year I couldnt even get a

Nah, I couldn't afford to buy it in the FIRST place...<g>
Ok, so that's a cool deal.  Was that advertized beforehand, or did you guys go
just *hoping* to find some good deals.  And what time did you go?  Someone
earlier said 5:30 am.  I guess I haven't seen anything that would make me stand
in line that early, for that long...
