Force RS driver v2.5 on XP Pro

by kayf16h » Sun, 05 May 2002 02:52:58

I should be grateful for some help with an annoying problem.  In brief, I
have a Win XP Pro system, ForceRS wheel using version 2.5 unified drivers
and the following hardware:

Epox 8KHA+ board, AMD XP 1800 chip, 512MB memory
Adaptec 2100S SCSI RAID driving three Fujitsu MAJ3182MP 18.2GB disks
Adaptec 2940 SCSI card driving a DVD and CD-RW
Videologic SonicFury sound
Diamond Pro modem
GeForce 4 4400 graphics card

When playing a game using the ForceRS wheel and pedals, I can drive normally
for about three minutes, after which the wheel input seems to lock-up.  The
game continues to run normally but the input given by the wheel remains as
it was when the 'lock' occurred, regardless of the actual input.  For
example, if I happen to be going around a corner, the throttle/brake and
steering input will freeze, leaving the game running but the car going round
in circles!

In order to test the problem, I have:

a.. run GPL and F1-2001 with a normal two axis, two button joystick.  Both
games run fine with no input lock-up.
b.. deleted the ForceRS drivers and unplugged the wheel.  Restarted the
computer and reinstalled the latest version 2.5 drivers per the FAQ on the
Act-Labs site.  Restarted, plugged in the wheel and let the automatic
hardware detection set-up the wheel again.
c.. checked that hidserv.dll is correctly installed and registered.
d.. tried both DirectX and non-DX games with the same effect.
  e.. re-installed DirectX8.1 - no change
If I come out of the game, unplug the RS and power it up again, I can get
another three minutes of play.  Alternatively, if I simply close down the
game without unplugging the wheel and check the control panel/game
controllers/properties/test input, the red position indicators do not
respond to wheel or pedal movement.

As far as I can see, this is a driver problem.

Have you any suggestions please?

Thanks for the help,

K.
