weird controller problem

by Joel Willstei » Fri, 12 Dec 2003 12:28:54

Simply stated, I don't have any brakes with my TSW2 when it's plugged
into the gameport.

I'm at my wits end trying to solve my controller problems.  I run in both
a gpl and nascar 2003 t/a mod league and the problem occurs with both sims.
I've been using a TSW2 steering wheel for three years and haven't had a
single problem with it other then changing pots every so often. I've been
using it in the split axis mode plugged into the gameport,1st with my Sound
Blaster Live X-Gamer 5.1, then after a computer upgrade to a A7V333 MB, AMD
XP 2000+ cpu, Xtacy Ti 4-4400 graphics card, I used the onboard sound card
since the SB caused my system to lock up during the booting process.

About a month ago I lost the brakes in both sims using the gameport. I
changed pots and still had the problem.  I switched back to the USB adapter
from TSW and in both sims I had functioning brakes, so the problem can't be
the pots, nor the plug. I don't like using the USB adapter since the Asus
motherboard uses the VIA chipset which has problems maintaining contact with
the USB *** device.  I've installed the lastest Nvidia drivers, the
latest 4 in 1 drivers, and the 1.10 patch for VIA that was supposed to
correct the problem.  It didn't. So I need to go back to the game port
option.

Tonight I installed a Turtle Beach sound card after uninstalling the PCI
sound drivers, and disabiling the onboard soundcard.  The TB card installed
perfectly. The sound is great, but even after recalibrating my TSW, 1st in
the windows applet then in each sim, I still don't have any brakes. I
switched back to the USB adapter, and I have brakes again.

None of this makes much sense. There has to be a logical reason not to
have brakes with the game port, but they work with the USB adapter.

All three pots are the recommended 250 ohm pots from TSW.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Before I had them install the USB update, I was having problems with the
Rockfire USB adapter.  Dave sent me a new one, and all was fine.

What version of Windows are you runnung? Do you see the brake axis in
Windows and/or GPL and N2003 when connected to the gameport?

I was having some similar problems with my old TSW too; turned out to be a
bad stereo jack.

Sid,

I'm running Win98se.  I see the brake axis in both the windows applet
and in gpl and nascar 2003 when I'm connected to to the game port. They look
and respond exactly as they do with the USB adapter.

Monty,

I never thought of that.  I'll head on down to Radio Shack and buy
one. Who knows, it just may work.
