Is it likely that any versions of GP2 floating around will have been
deliberately nobbled to make them run slow?
That would be a good way of minimizing the effect of any piracy of the
show demos, wouldn't it. So, do developers do this?
And that release date of June 28: isn't that a Friday? The game would be
bound to be released on a Monday, eh?

Nope, for example Civilization II (also Microprose) was released on a Friday.
I guess that maybe Saturday is the biggest day for sales?

You are right. Microprose almost always release games at the end of
the month on a Friday, for the simple reason that that is when most
people get paid :)
