Just in time before the European Hercules Cup Series circuit visits Bristol
Motor Speedway for The Checkered 250, SpieleCity, one of the biggest German
online magazines, is delighted to announce the signing of a sponsoring
contract with Wolfgang Woeger.

The Checkered 250 will be the first race, where the Austrian will drive the
No. 26 SpieleCity Dodge, which carries the colors and the internet address
of SpieleCity: http://www.racesimcentral.net/.

"We are really looking forward to the cooperation with Wolfgang Woeger and
hope, that our support will help Wolfgang to climb up the rankings and stay
in the top-10", states Thomas Gruenewaelder, CEO of SpieleCity.

"Last but not least the sponsorship gives us the opportunity to make NASCAR
and especially ESCORS better known in the German speaking community."

The contract between Woeger and SpieleCity will award earnings to the
Austrian  drivers based on his performances in the events.Part of the deal
is, that Woeger will write race-reports on every Sunday along with photos
from the races. SpieleCity will publish these reports on their website.

It is probably the first time in sim-racing history, that a driver will earn
money for driving a sponsored car. Both SpieleCity and Woeger believe that
this is the future of the online-racing scene.

This has already being going on in GP3. There's a professional GP3 league in
operation since early this year. There's a place for 11 teams (22 drivers) and
each team had to pay 1000 euro's to compete, many teams found sponsors to fund
their entry.

Congrats to WW, but maybe SpieleCity should spend some of that money on some
server hardware and/or bandwidth. That's gotta be one of the slowest web
sites I've every visited!

There have been sponsored teams, drivers, and leagues in NASCAR for
quite a few years.  I'm among them.

IIRC Byron Forbes was also sponsored back in the ICR2 heyday.  Whatever
happened to him anyways?

I was Byron's Team mate in the first GPL World Series, Wolfgang raced with
us as well as many other noted drivers. The last race of that season was the
last I saw or heard from Byron. That was a couple of years ago now. He had
just done back to back Indycar season including the 24 hour races then a GPL
season added up to 18 months of non stop league racing. I think may have
wiped him out.

I miss the old geezer....he knew how to liven up a discussion here on
RAS, someone else in here once said after someone made a particularly
stupid post;

"Ordinary flaming won't do here, we need an industrial sized one,
where's Byron Forbes? "

Beers and cheers

I'd like to know.  We race together in the with ICR2 on Team Black Squirrel and
Team Lightning Bolt (with Rudy de Wit).  That was about 4 years ago and I
haven't heard from them lately.  So, if either of you are out there, drop me a
line.

P.S.  Congrats Wolfgang.
P.S.S.  The current record holder of the GPL track, Riverside (1:15.56),
Christian Szymczak (of Oakland, California) is on page 2 of the Barber Dodge
Pro Series pullout in the July, 2001 issue of RACER.  Pretty cool.
