Nascar 4 - startup problems

by Andre Warrin » Tue, 24 Apr 2001 18:40:53

The Euro version has some strange problems with the startup. I have to
click the N4 shortcut 5-10 times before it starts. Is this also due to
that stupid copy protection? I thought that the people who had the
copy protection problems couldn't start N4 at all.
I have the problem with both of my drivers, a Creative DVD player and
the HP 8100 burner.
Someone else who also has the Euro version has exactly the same
problem..

I have similar problems (euro version), when I click the icon on my desktop
nothing seems to happen, but I can hear my cd drive trying to start up a
couple of times, after quite a while it finally starts. The same sort of
thing happens when I start a practice or race session, sometimes it takes
just a few seconds but most of the time it seems to take almost two minutes,
while my harddisk and cd drive aren't doing anything! It's a small problem,
but it is quite annoying...

I had a similar problem with the European version of (tadaaa!) Grand Prix
Legends: I would click the shortcut, wait a minute and finally GPL launched.
I got the US version of N4 and that's not giving me a problem. Maybe it has
something to do with the factory that is used to produce the European
Papyrus CDROMS? Just a wild guess..

Yup, Andre, mine takes up to 2 minutes to start. Annoying, isn't it!

Andre,

I believe Olav got the same problem as you....  and he too got a DVD drive.
I think this is due to the Securom copy-protection thingy.

Not sure if a patch will fix this or not... so perhaps getting a(nother)
"normal" CD-player is the best option?   They *should* be dirt-cheap these
days...

Just saw this post on Sierra's NASCAR4 forum:

Perhaps this will help....?

For firmware links for the CD-R/RW - try this page:

With GPL you had to change something in the core.ini file.
There's something like 'modem search = 1' in it, and if your modem was
turned off GPL took a couple of minutes before it would start.
I can't remember exactly but it was something like that.

Lol, the 'someone else' I was referring to was Olav :)

But I only have room for 2 drives.. and I won't replace either my DVD
drive or my burner for a normal cdrom player just because papy screwed
up with this Securom protection :(

We had a blast yesterday with the IGPLC crew at Bristol and Watkins,
too bad you couldn't join us Ed. My report is on the IGPLC forum.

You're right, sorry.
Anyway, it's so stupid, I've got hundreds of original games and
notasingleonofthem have startup problems, except N4.
That Securom protection SUCKS!

That's unfortunately true.  I have the same problem too. It seems that the
game hangs every now and then when trying to start it. It just hangs there
on the screen that says N4 1.0.0.0. W2k's task manager can shut it down so
no problem. This is with a Plextor IDE cd-writer.

Afaik the problems mostly happen with DVD drives or burners.
I uprgades the firmware of both drives, but no luck, N4 still starts 1
out of 5 times. I'll have to live with this ***I guess :(
