My interpretation of the original post was that the gentleman was seeking a
current video solution that would work well with GPL, so my answer to your

is "No".

I've played with the MirrorsEvery setting and have never achieved nearly the
results that I do with the Banshee, although, as you know, the Banshee has
intermittent texture problems in GPL.

Glad you had results that you found satisfactory with the TNT.

About to pull the trigger on a Thriller AGP 8MB. Aside from eliminating the
texture problems, do you think it will offer any advantages over my Banshee
in a PII-450?...bearing in mind that my sole focus is GPL and 2D for *work*
apps...not to suggest that GPL's not work, of course.

Thanks again for your Celeron help, btw, John.

The banshee does have minor and very solvable conflicts with GPL. I believe the
answer is to install glide 2.53 in the GPL directory and leave glide 2.54 for
all other apps, like I said I am no techno weenie so this may not be perfectly
correct. The thriller is will give higher fps on 300 or less cpu's, more or
less equal fps with 3dfx on 350 and better cpu's.
Most users prefer the thriller's look but some go for 3dfx.  Perhaps you should
buy a thriller through a channel that allows returns just in case, then give it
a try. I must admit a certain amount of luck, I rarely have crashes or lockups,
just follow the basics and hope.

That's the common belief, but I found it to be not quite true. I have
an 8 Meg PCI Thriller and an 8 Meg Voodoo II. On my old CPU
(Pentium Pro 200), the Thriller was clearly faster, about 5-10 fps

expected the Voodoo to be faster than the Thriller, but that's not
the case. The Thriller still gets me 3-5 fps more. Doesn't sound a
lot, but it makes a difference. With 19 AI, all options on, track &
cars in the mirrors I get 30+ fps at the start (back of the grid) and
36 by the time I'm on second gear. Solid 36 from there on. With
the Voodoo II I still get the occasional glitch, dropping under 30
fps.

So by all means, do try the Thriller.

Banshee

What is this Thriller 3D card? Is it TNT, Banshee, or Rendition? I've never
heard of it.

just upgraded from celeron 266  (ran at 400) to a celeron 300a (runs
at 450MHz) BIG frame rate jump on the grid and at starts , and the
game is noticeably faster and smoother throughout (not that the
celeron 266/400 was at all slow).

My conclusions

1. John is right

2. GPL uses L2 cache extensively

2. if you are thinking about buying celeron 300a for GPL  and
overclocking, BUY NOW - you will notice the difference ! In UK there
are a few left in distribution channels - got mine for 51ukp at a
West Midlands Computer Fair :))

>You should get one really fast as Intel has stopped production! It works best
>when combined with an Abit bh6 motherboard, very easy to overclock and a great
