HELP needed with ICR2,car hates sharp bends

by Mark Candli » Thu, 14 Dec 1995 04:00:00

Can anyone help, Iam having real difficulty with ICR2,
I just can't seem to get the car around sharp bends
such as at Surfers Paradise or Detroit.
I had no problem with these tracks in ICR1
but the nose of the car just does not want to go
around the corners, the wheels are turning in but
I just keep going straight or I turn in VERY slowly.
I can't figure it out , I've tried changing the brake balance,
roll bar stifness, wing angles, tyre componds but
nothing seems to help. All the other cars are wizzing
by on the inside as I try to avoid the barriers.

HELP!!

Mark Candlin.

PS. Iam using a Joystick but it calibrates ok so I don't
think thats the problem.

Ect.

Try slowing down for the sharp turns.  I mean even more.  Another item
you might want to check is the steering lock.  Those courses require a
lot of steering lock.  As a matter of fact, look at the steering lock
first, then try slowing down even more.  The idea is that there is a
speed where your car can make the turn.  It may be slower than the AIs,
but it does exist.  Once you find it, you'll be able to take those
corners and then get them on the straights.

I haven't tried Detroit yet, but I have run Surfer's.  I've found
that the FAST setup will suffice (the ACE setup is much too
unstable for me).

The key to running with the CPU boys is to tweak the gears to get
the most speed possible on the front and back straights.  Unlike
what the manual said, the FRONT straight should be where you set
top gear.  Gear-tweaking will give you the speed necessary to make
a run when you go for a pass.

Also, you can lower the rear wing in the FAST setup to improve
speed even further, because you're not getting any oversteer.

Your main problem may be that you're trying to use the braking
points you used in ICR1 in ICR2.  The braking points used in ICR1
will just not work in ICR2, no matter how much wing you dial in.
What I've had to do is brake earlier for most of the turns.

Also, if there's another car looking like it wants to pass me, I
take a line in the middle of the track as I close up to the turn
(the track is narrow so there's not much room for the passing car
to manuever), brake even EARLIER for the turn than I'd normally
would with no traffic, and try to take the inside line away from
the car.  (I believe that's called "blocking" :-)

I use a joystick too.  A cheapo Quickshot - $14.95.  Take that,
steering wheel boys. :-)

: PS. Iam using a Joystick but it calibrates ok so I don't
: think thats the problem.

One thing you might want to try is linear vs. non-linear steering.  One
might work better for road courses and the other for ovals.

I had this problem at Laguna Seca in the demo (anyone got the
full version in Australia yet?)  The solution is quite simple
and reflects well on the driving model:

        Don't turn so hard!

You are probably going into the turns, running a bit wide,
and pushing the stick to the limits.  In a real car, if
you come to a turn and throw the wheel full lock, you
would never get round - the same seems true for ICR2.  If
you here the tyres scream, ease off on the turn and then
turn in again.

What, Julian, it's OK for you to quote others in your posts, but not
OK for others to quote you in their posts?

That seems fair...NOT!

Craig, I didn't say I was getting any GOOD laptimes with the joystick.  :-)

But I'm still having fun nonetheless.
