GPL Graphic Updates - Where and what to get?

by Gary Tayl » Fri, 24 May 2002 06:08:05

I just re-installed GPL (with all the offical updates, etc.) after a
long absence and looked forward to bumping up the resolution since I
now have a much more powerful machine than I used to have. The first
thing I noticed was that the***pit graphics were suffering with age.
I assumed that there were probably some graphic enhancements out there
to be had and with a little searching, I found a few new hi-res car
models/cockpits to download (GLEA?), and they look awesome.
That took care of that issue. However, I was wondering if there were
other updates out there for track graphics, etc. Plus, I was wondering
what were considered the best updated graphics all-around that most
people are using these days.
Are there any downloads that will comprehensively update car and track
graphics with one install, or will I just need to search for bits and
pieces individually? I'm finding a lot of dead links when searching
around for this stuff.
Lastly, what are the most popular add-on tracks (offline and online)
and are they generally graphically superior to the original GPL
tracks?
Thanks for your help.

You've asked a lot of questions there. I recommend visiting Hotgrid's links
page at http://hotgrids.racesimcentral.com for a comprehensive list of GPL
website that is regularly updated.

As for track graphics there are some good ones to be had by Dark Green,
Berca and Van Gossum at
http://www.racesimcentral.com/downloads/gpl/trackadd.shtml

<snip>
<snip>

http://www.gplpp.com should keep you occupied until 2087... :-)

Everyone has their own opinions, of course, but there are three add-on
tracks that stand out for me:

Castle Combe - a track I love visiting in real life anyway.

Solitude - the first "great" add-on track, and still huge fun.

Le Mans Sarthe - not so great with AI as they can't do co-operative
slipstreaming down the Mulsanne Straight, but online is a different
matter :-D It's a mystery to me why so few people join VROC Le MAns
races these days...

There are other excellent tracks, of course - Mount Panorama (Bathurst)
for example, but if I mentioend *all* the good ones I'd be here for
ages...!

Do you have a good download link for Castle Combe? The only one I've found
(http://www.designerslaboratory.com/gpl/) is a dead link.
Thanks.

Well, at the track database there is currently 6500+ ratings (THANKS
ALL!!! :) on all GPL tracks. All tracks are rated on looks,
fun-to-drive and general must-have score.

Sorry - I can't find one. I thought of looking at the new GPLEA page
( http://gplea.racesimcentral.com/ ), but a lot of their links still
don't work (eg the "Cars" one - grrr, I want that Eagle 2.52!)[1], so I
really don't know. The zipfile is over 3 megs, so I can't mail it to
you (Yahoo limit is 1.5 megs) - maybe someone else can?

[1] If the page requires you to have all manner of cookies, Java etc
turned on, then that's not very sensible!
