RBR - Windows Lockups

In case anyone's experiencing similar...
Just spent most of the afternoon trying to stop RBR freezing Windows at
random anywhere from the opening menu to three quarters through a stage.  It
was most annoying because the only way out was to reboot, nothing else
worked.  Tried new video drivers, reverted to onboard sound (Santa Cruz was
causing stuttering - suspected a hardware conflict), different display
settings high graphic low graphics etc. etc.  Finally out of desperation I
uninstalled SP2, and guess what? :)

I'm running Sp2 here - no problems

The fact that it randomly locks up tells me that it is more liekly to be
another windows service that's causing contention, or that your video system
is being overstressed (are you overclocking?)

First thing to do is close all that's running in the taskbar next to the
clock, especially any third party firewall (disconnect your Internet
connection whilst playing )

I have SP2 installed without a single hiccup in RBR. Runs great actually...

I wonder what SP2 could be doing to cause crashes like that.. did it nag you
into installing AV software or it's firewall and stuff? maybe try disabling
that? I have no idea..

I got this too, I'm running a 5900 & XP3000 on Win2k. Just wait about 10
secs & it'll carry on with the replay. Try pressing num-lock to see if
your PC has actually locked up. If the keyboard light goes on & off it's
just the game that's frozen, not the whole PC.

No idea here too.  It did lots of nagging when first installed, so I'd
turned of it's firewall and was just using NAV and NFW.  It's now got all
the same services running back at SP1 and no problems, so I've lost the
opportunity to do any more tests, but hey, RBR is running fine so I can live
without it for the time being.

Not sure if the initial poster's problem has anything to do with XP
services, but here's a nice site to determine whether or not you need
certain services.  I've got mine down to what I think is an absolute
minimum.  I'd say that 90% of the services are unnecessary.  You never know
when one is going to***up some piece of software.

AV programs are of course notorious for causing all sorts of problems.
Ironically, these AV programs may protect your system from the outside, but
my experience is that internally they cause a lot of problems.

Video settings and drivers can also cause problems.  When I do have
lockups-- which is actually
rare-- I check my video settings first.  Changing something as trivial as
color-depth sometimes fixes a problem.

Sound issues would be the next thing to check.  With older machines which
ran DOS, it seemed to almost always be a problem with interrupts and device
conflicts.

One time I had a problem which was taking forever to solve.  I was totally
mystified; but it turned out that a prior program had altered my system's
clock and that caused a lot of problems.  Another time I found that setting
my system's clock to military time was making one program behave
erratically.  I got rid of the program, seeing that it is a MUST that my
system's clock be set to MT.

So far RBR feels great.  No problems yet with lockups, though there is the
occasional frame rate drop, which is not good.  I think that might have to
do with some of RBR's start-up settings, such as shadows and lighting.
Those not only cause big frame-rate hits but they also can cause lock-ups.

Before I forget (which I almost did) here's the site I referred to earlier,

<Snip>

Good tip with the NumLock key.  But as I say I don't have the problem any
more since uninstalling SP2, also it wasn't in Replay, it was in the initial
menu system and up to part way through a stage - never got as far as a
Replay during the first 3/4 hours.  A couple of times I left it for more
than 5 minutes to see if it would clear, but no luck, I was trying Esc,
Alt+Tab, Windows Key (to bring up the Start Menu) and Ctrl+Alt+Delete,
nothing worked expect the case reset or power button.

System is XP3200+ 9700pro (originally Cat 3.10 tried Cat 4.6 and 4.8 - used
the Cat uninstaller between changes)

Interesting....

I've got a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz...no lockups but the audio COMPLETELY
stops at random times. Of course, the newest drivers are old.

Opon returning to the desktop- after I quit RBR- the audio is toast.
Running anything on the desktop that generates audio- like WinAmp- gives an
error that says there are no drivers present!

I tried to install DX9c but that isn't installing any software!

I've got a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz too and the voice of the co-pilot
is totally mangled, when you race a stage. I think the makers of RBR
haven't tested their code on this card.

Turtle Beach Santa Cruz here too, co-driver sound is OK, but I did lose
all audio a couple of times, no sound even when I quit the game on other
stuff, until I reboot.

Worth an upgrade to an Audigy 2 do you think?

I'm intending to upgrade my 2 year old PC soon already, but SCi should
release a patch for the Turtle Beach problems.

Will they bother for a discontinued card?

Went ahead and upgraded to an Audugy 2 and all sound problems have
disappeared.
