Not sure if the initial poster's problem has anything to do with XP
services, but here's a nice site to determine whether or not you need
certain services. I've got mine down to what I think is an absolute
minimum. I'd say that 90% of the services are unnecessary. You never know
when one is going to***up some piece of software.
AV programs are of course notorious for causing all sorts of problems.
Ironically, these AV programs may protect your system from the outside, but
my experience is that internally they cause a lot of problems.
Video settings and drivers can also cause problems. When I do have
lockups-- which is actually
rare-- I check my video settings first. Changing something as trivial as
color-depth sometimes fixes a problem.
Sound issues would be the next thing to check. With older machines which
ran DOS, it seemed to almost always be a problem with interrupts and device
conflicts.
One time I had a problem which was taking forever to solve. I was totally
mystified; but it turned out that a prior program had altered my system's
clock and that caused a lot of problems. Another time I found that setting
my system's clock to military time was making one program behave
erratically. I got rid of the program, seeing that it is a MUST that my
system's clock be set to MT.
So far RBR feels great. No problems yet with lockups, though there is the
occasional frame rate drop, which is not good. I think that might have to
do with some of RBR's start-up settings, such as shadows and lighting.
Those not only cause big frame-rate hits but they also can cause lock-ups.
Before I forget (which I almost did) here's the site I referred to earlier,
