Even though this may be a sim racing newsgroup, since most people here are
racing fans, I would like to take the time out to remember Alan Kulwicki.

4 years ago, on April 1, 1993, the Hooters private jet crashed at the
Bristol airport and caught on fire, killing Alan and 3 others flying to
Bristol Speedway for the race.  It was just the middle of a tragic streak
that has continued to this day, with bigname drivers or televised
accidents resulting in fatalities.  Like John Nemechek, Blaine Johnson,
Jeff Krosnoff and more.
He was just another low-on-cash racer who started the #7 team (now
owned by Geoff Bodine, who won Sears Point last year)from Milwaukee, first
with the ASA, then to Winston Cup NASCAR racing.  He won his first race at
Phoenix, and did the driving-backwards "Polish Victory Lap" after that
race.  He would then be the 1992 Winston Cup Champion, even though he only
won 3 races that year, for a total of 5 in his career.
After that year, he became a more fan-friendly driver, signing
autographs as willingly as Richard Petty, and was still a top driver.  But
it all came to an end on that night of April 1, 1993.
Like all the drivers that have died before and since, we will pay
tribute to this very talented driver.

Alan Kulwicki may very well be the last independent to compete at the
championship level in Winston Cup, and another talented driver who's career
was cut short under tragic circumstances.

You'll find Alan Kulwicki's 1992 Hooters car, the year he won the
championship, on the IWCCCARS site. If you happen to win a race in the
Hooters car, don't forget to drive your victory lap backwards... ;)

We'll be remembering the #7 on Sunday...

Christopher,
I dont think its inappropriate at all in this ng and "screw" whoever
thinks so. We all should remember
the ones who bring us joy every weekend and enable us to party with our
bros and root on our favorite
driver! Alan Kulwicki was known by millions as a "sincere, down to
earth" type of chap and any rememberance
is most welcomed. I still feel the lost of his presence to this day!

Maybe you can paint an Alan Kulwicki championship car based on your $80
templates, and then SELL the car for another $80, for a total of $160!!
If it doesn't sell well, just post it 8 times a day in this newsgroup
under the topic "HOT CAR!!!" and then see how many people buy it, ok?

Just another prime example of someone that can't justify one actually
asking a price
for his services rendered. When I "advertise" a car(HOT CAR), it has
been one that I personally
have created and I have offered freely amongst whoever would like it. I
haven't started advertising
some kinda "virtual" paintcar service and dont plan to. Someone asked
for a "custom" car and since I have had experience in painting cars I
offered my services. Unfortunately some people think everybody "owes"
them something for nothing. Maybe Mr. Otter doesnt have a problem with
money, just a lack of it!  =8>]

I had actually seen Alan race on the Slinger Speedway short track here
in Wisconsin back when he was a nobody.  He drove the 97 WLPX car for a
local radio station which no longer exists.  He dominated here before
moving on.

It is also ironic that when Alan raced at Wisconsin International
Raceway back in '81 in a series race both him and another very good race
car driver named Larry Detjens (#25) tangled in corner number 2, which
sent Larry flying drivers'-side first into the end of a guard rail (also
ironic) which ultimately killed him.  Detjens was from Wausau, WI and
raced consitently up front with*** Trickle, Mark Martin, Kulwicki, Ted
Musgrave, and Jim Sauter.  I heard that in a few years' time Larry was
going to get into NASCAR.  It's a shame to lose two good race drivers,
and I have nothing against Kulwicki - in fact I think he was ahead of
his time and his accomplishment of being NASCAR champion almost by
himself was just incredible.  If they were both still alive.....who
knows?
