Eagerly awaiting the release of GPl I've been practicing at Monza and
Watkins Glen. I have a Pentium II 233 Monster 3d (version one) and 32
meg of memory. Periodically while playing the game will briefly pause
and the hard disk spin a bit. Distracting to say the least, Ive turned
off what I can think of (fast find for example) can anyone point me to
some setup tips to speed up Win95 so that it doesnt get in the way of
GPL. I do plan to upgrade to 64meg memory on the same day a purchase
GPL, hopefully this week.

I think you should consider upgrading to 96 MB. In addition to getting rid
of the pauses in the game, it will also store a lot more laps for the
replay. I think half the fun is watching the replay after a race.

More RAM is a good idea, definitely. Besides that, make sure you have
no useless apps running in the background. To check this out, press
ctrl+alt+del. This will bring up the task manager. The only stuff that
should be there is Winmsuit, Systray and Explorer. Kill all the other
tasks by selecting "end task". If you want to get rid of this stuff
entirely, check your start-up folder and remove all entries. It's also
possible that some programs installed themselves in the old win.ini
under [windows] load= or run=.
You're using Netscape. Some of the newer versions of it have the
annoying habit of installing some useless and unasked for "AOL Instant
Messenger" software which also runs in the background. The only way to
get rid of this little *** is to edit the registry and to remove
the key that starts this thing.
And, last but not least, disable your screensaver and other power
saving features.

More memory may help, but you may want set your virtual memory as a
"locked" amount.  It sounds as if Win95 in its infinite wisdom is
realizing that it didn't guesstimate the correct amount of virtual
memory and is now claiming more disk space.  If you have enough disk
space, make your virtual memory and least 2.5 x the amount of memory you
have installed.  Set both the lower and higher number the same.

More is not necessarily better.  Many motherboards will only cache the
first 64MB of physical memory.  If something important happens to be placed
in physical memory above the 64MB boundary, this could actually decrease
performance significantly.
