was hit in Sebring while riding his bicycle! See the link for the story.

I was a bit suspicious, being a Floridian the past 13 years, so I
hunted up the local Sebring newspaper's website where they had a
simple news article about his death.  Just as I suspected, Bob was
creamed by an EIGHTY-THREE YEAR OLD man who "didn't see him".

I tried riding my touring bike in Florida the first summer when I
moved there and it scared the ***out of me.  Bike's hung in the
garage ever since.   Half of 'em think you're supposed to be on the
sidewalk like a pedestrian and the other half just don't like
bicyclists.  Doesn't help either that 90% of the cyclists think you're
supposed to either ride on the sidewalk or opposing traffic like a
pedestrian.

The weather is gradually warming here in Seabrook, TX and I'm about
ready to prep the old Univega for some riding.  I think it *may* be
safer here...

Florida, especially southern Florida, is widely regarded as the worst
cycling enviroment in the America.

For the most part a car will simply run you down without even thinking about
it.

A very different enviroment for a Frenchman I'm afraid. Bob was always a
favorite of mine.

Oh yeah, and autumn/winter is the worst, suddenly the streets are crowded
with big, really BIG luxury cars with tiny bold heads behind the wheel,
retired folks being able to leave their air conditioned appartments because
of the somewhat lower temps outside.

On one ride to the beach I actually saw three (3!) accidents involving those
nice folks on three street crossings within 4 or 5 miles.... scary! ;)
