I suppose that even if you were to look at the potential sales figures for a
game that could concievably combine the name recognition of a character
license like Pokemon with the solid gameplay and appeal of Gran Turismo 2,
it would still be unfair to compare all that to the value of a NASCAR-based
game.

For example, there are at least TWO major NASCAR games on the market right
now (more like FOUR if you count N3, N2K, NASCAR Legends, and the Craftsman
Truck Accelerator Pack), yet there are NO NASCAR games in the current list
of the top 30 interactive software titles . . . but there are FIVE Pokemon
games in the top 30, and Gran Turismo 2 is in the top 30 as well.

Hmmmm . . .

I guess it really IS unfair to compare Speed Racer to Jeff Gordon -- Jeff's
obviously just a cheap rip-off of the original.  If I had to choose between
Brooke and Trixie, though, Brooke would win hands-down!

;-)

Speed Racer Signs With Games-Advertising [5/25/00 10:49:28 AM ET]
Speed Racer Enterprises today announced that it has requested the aid of
in-game advertising agency Games-Advertising in order to pursue potential
videogame publishers as well as developers interesting in acquiring the
Speed Racer character license for videogame-development purposes.
John Bodin, VP of communications for Games-Advertising, stated, "The
time is ripe for someone to develop a new, state-of-the-art Speed Racer
videogame."
Jim Rocknowski, executive vice president of Speed Racer Enterprises,
adds, "Speed Racer is the Jeff Gordon of the animation world, and given the
proper treatment, this license could prove to be as valuable as a NASCAR
license to a game developer or publisher."

But of course we know how PR stuff like that is always made of half-lies.
Anybody in the *** industry remembers the flop that the Speed Racer game
made a couple of years ago.  So people now say they don't remember such
game? Exactly, because there is absolutely no license powers for old cartoon
fictional characters.  The game went straight into the bargain bins.

Should license that NASCAR cartoon for a title marketed for young
children's, or even better, WACKY RACES!!!!  <sfx : Muttley dog laugh>

Speed Racer Enterprises specifically wants to avoid the kind of lame
license-based product that was produced a few years back.  They want to see
the license used properly to produce something immersive and
true-to-character.  Think "Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed" meets
"Driver," and you're on the right track -- they're NOT interested in a hokey
"Test Drive 6" knockoff featuring the Mach 5.

FYI, Infogrames HAS picked up the license for the Wacky Racers, and a game
is forthcoming:

I can't get much more off-topic than THAT.  <G>

Go Speed Racer. Go Speed Racer. Go Speed Racer. GoOoOoOooooooo......

I have always been a fan of Speed Racer (even tried to get a job with a
company that was doing a Speed Racer comic book back in the late 80's...in
my aimless artist days)
I'm not so sure the character would be very popular now...but I hope they
don't update him to be more  a gangsta thug. Could you imagine a Speed
Racer/Eminem combination... yo dat would be foul.

You had an "aimless artist" period, Brian?  Or are you just mocking me? <G>

FYI, Wildstorm Comics (a DC/Warner subsidiary) recently did a VERY good take
on Speed Racer -- check this link out for details:

http://www.wildstorm.com/speedracer/

The miniseries was out about 6 months ago, but some comics stores might
still have it.  The miniseries has been released in trade paperback form, so
you might be able to pick it up there.  The art and story by Tommy Yune are
EXCELLENT, IMO.

I would never mock you..now that your a VEEP. :)

Thanks for the link. Good art. The series I was talking about was produced
by NOW comics. They killed most of their books when a little series called
"Terminator" they had started doing well.... based on a movie or
something...I don;t know.. ignored them when they thought my art was too
wacky for Speed Racer... A car than never dents and a semi-intelligent
monkey and my art was wacky....
Make sure the game let's you race as RacerX.

And, just for kicks, here's a shot of the Mach 3, which might be of interest
to all you F1/CART/IRL fans out there:

http://www.wildstorm.com/speedracer/sr1p14.jpg
http://www.wildstorm.com/speedracer/sr1p17.jpg

Looks kind of like something from GPL to me.  Imagine that AND the Mach 5,
plus a few other cars, all in one game.  Done right, a Speed Racer game
could be a very interesting and entertaining diversion indeed.

Wrap all this up in something like the game engine from Powerslide,
Breakneck, Dethkarz, or NFSPU, and I think you'd have something we would all
enjoy to some degree or another.

It's GOT to have the Shooting Star in it, and if I have any say, you'll
definitely be able to drive as Racer X, too, 'cause somebody's got to be
there to bail out Speed when he gets in a pinch!

So that they have many ethnic backgrounds covered, they should make
him a sassy black guy like the Fresh Prince. I just can't get enough
of that stereoty... I mean, character.
Spridle's striped beanie can be replaced with a yamika.
Trixie should be fat, since there were no fat girls on the show.

The Mach 5 will no longer be powered by fossil fuel.
Al***says cars burning fossil fuel are going to destroy the planet
in 6 months, and if Al says it, you know its true.
Maybe they could make it electric, and burn fossil fuel to generate
the electricity. That's the ticket.

In episode one, Trixie discloses that her weight problem is caused by
the psychological strain of having a name similar to a breakfast
cereal.
Pops confesses that his gruff exterior is just a front that he puts on
since he was abused as a child.

In episode 2, PETA comes after speed for keeping Chim-Chim locked up
in the trunk of the Mach 5. In an act of loving desperation, the crew
drives the car underwater to Africa, and releases Chim-Chim back into
the wild.
