Track Shortcuts

I am of two minds when it comes to shortcuts.  I loved the coin-op
game
Rush (bad port of course), trying to hunt down all the shortcuts to be
found.
But usually what would happen is:

The shortcut in question is so superior to the "main" path that
everyone
uses the shortcut, or

The shortcut doesn't save you time, or the tolerances are so
unforgiving
that you wreck too often, even if it saves you time if/when you
successfully
navigate it.

In short (no pun intended) most shortcuts don't present a genuine
choice
(too easy or too hard).  They >can< be done well, but usually aren't.

The AI of course usually can't be "trained" to use the shortcut.  As

Easter Eggs of sorts they can be fun, but I'd imagine in this group of
hidebound purists (see the smiley---> :-) they wouldn't go over well
(hence the lack of shortcuts in any of the fantasy tracks I have DLed
for
GPL-on a few they had some side roads, but they never lead anywhere).
All that said, I'd personally like to see some...
