I got the freezeup blues

GPL has got this *** habit of freezing up on me. I just added a VooDoo2
1000 12MB card so I could run the 3dfx version and it's great. A good solid
36 FPS. But this freezeup is for the birds. At some point well into a race,
the screen just freezes. The game is still going on and you can hear my car
eventually crash. CNTL-ALT-DELETE is the only way out.  Does this sound
familiar to anyone. I've tried messing aound with lots of parameters with no
obvious success. Doesn't happen all the time. It seems like it takes some
time to load up with whatever is going bad in the code and then freezeup.
Also a couple of times, weird things appear on parts of the screen but the
race is OK. Like maybe something got written over that wasn't supposed to.

Thanks,

Gene

Are you overclocking your Voodoo2 card? I have a Creative Labs
12MB Voodoo2 card and no problems like this. I run it at the default
speed which I believe is 60hz. Since it is fine at first then crashes
I think it may be heat related. Also did you get the latest drivers
from www.3dfx.com???

Hi,
I had the exact same problem with the newer drivers for my Voodoo2 12
MB.  In my case I have a Diamond Monster II and I switched from using the
2.07 drivers to using the older 2.03 drivers and GPL works fine.  For me
anyway, anything above Glide 2.53 seems to cause problems for GPL.  Maybe
try installing some slightly older drivers for your card and see if that
fixes the problem (or place and older version of glide32.dll in your GPL
main directory.

Hope this helps,
John

I have had exactly the same problem with a cl 12mb voodoo2.  I think the
problem is heat related.  Do you have your computer well ventilated and an
extra fan on the card?  I added a TennMax Stealth cooler and now I run the
card overclocked with no problems at all.  I use the glide2.56 drivers from
the 3dfx site which let me eliminate the glide2.53 drivers fom the gpl file.
Good Luck,
Mike Taylor

Hi Mike,

You may be right about it being a heat problem. I just coincindentally upped
the ole air conditioning in the midst of our heat wave and no crashes! 3
blown engines in the Ferrari, but that's a different problem!
