Well done mate. I remember when in the 1st months GPL came out the WR
for Monza was 1.27 something by Wolfgang Woeger, and I remember then
buying he game and saying to myself:" Right, now I'll wont rest until
I beat this record, (that is still driving with fuel for 60 laps or so
and the default setup, without even knowing about it) how
presumptuous!
Now, 9 months later and I just only broke my pb of 1.28.03 with a
1.28.00 3 weeks ago, with a perfect lap by my standards, In fact it
felt like I went around in 1.26s (dream on!). My plan had been to
start 2000 on 1.27s laps, but I am expecting it in the next few weeks
now I finally learn how to setup the car to my liking. Actually I
broke into the 1.28s very quickly but have been stuck on them for
months, and its only now, months later that I feel I am making some
real progress, although still not happy with my driving.
But it would be nice if Papyrus could do some revamping on the GPL
interface as I must admit it is steadily looking outdated and
uninspiring to say the least. I think they could still get some more
money out of GPL with a bit more marketing and perhaps a few updates
to the game every now and then.
Anyway judging by my the rate of my progress I should be breaking into
the 1.26s probably just after you in 2052!
Now, back to Monza, Spa...
Cheers.
Mauricio.
Out of curiosity what is your setup for GPL, I mean which wheel,
pedals, game port or game card?
I drove for many months with the MSFF, but now have CH Pedals into
PDPI and LWFF and a 19'' monitor which is great for GPL, well and
Quake3!
[snip]
I use a Saitek R4 FF wheel (very much like the MSFF, technology wise) with a slightly modified brake pedal (the
squash ball thing), and connect it to a SB Live. PIII/450, V3 2000, 17'' monitor, and the sound comes through a
300W amplifier with a pair of tower speakers. When cranked up, it's almost as loud as a real DFV:)
I guess a decent set of Pedals (ala CH USB) would help, but they are rather difficult to find.
The single most important thing that helped me improve my laptimes, however, were the thousands of laps i have
spent on the track. GPL is the first computer game that I am still learning to play, after almost a year.

Bendsmaster,
Am a little embarrassed to be posting on the 1:27 thread as it takes me that long to get out of the pits but I was
wondering if you could tell me about your set-up. I have a MSFF and am looking for some improvement. Did the Ch
pedals, PDPI and the LWFF help? Which was the most noticeable improvement?
Thank very much
Larry

Well, at first I was quite happy with the MSFF and I thought this was
as good as it gets for the amount of money I spent. But my problem
started when I notice that no matter what I did I'd always lose
traction at the front of the car as I reduced from 5th to 4th going
into the Vialone (T1R) in Monza. It didn't matter how smoothly I
executed it, always the same result. Also exiting the parabolica, I
never felt I could really be on the gas any earlier, I decided I need
more precision on the pedals, and USB would certainly give me that
over the 15 year old design of current game ports in the market.
It took me only about 30 laps at Monza to get used to the LWFF, but I
knew even before trying it that I would NEVER get used to the LWFF
pedals, crap. So I bought the Ch pedals for 40.00 and connected them
to the PDPI. Now I couldn't play Toca2, RC2000 or MGPRS because these
games don't recognize two separate controllers. So I wired the CH
Pedals into the LWFF (very simple to do, an hour max time) and problem
solved. Back into GPL and now the CH Pedals go through the USB port in
the LWFF, but unfortunately their behaviour is not as precise. So I
connect them back to the PDPI and I am happy again although I have to
use the MSFF on my other pc to play any other sims.
Sorry for the long post but in short the LWFF is far, far better for
GPL, smoother, no jitter, more precision, although I have long fingers
and the shape of the MSFF is better suited for my hands.
The CH Pedals are a quality product and very neatly built, plus you
can rest your left foot all the way through a race instead of having a
stiff leg after six hours holding it still in GPL, in case you need to
brake. As for my lap times, frankly I have gained over a full second
on all my lap times, after a couple of weeks. I am more consistent as
I rarelly come off the track. Ok practice has given me all that, but
with this setup I always feel I can go faster, I am never satisfied
with the previous lap. It has put me closer to achieving the
all-mighty 1.26s at Monza, however far down the line it is.
My advice is: if you feel you need some improvement and you've had the
MSFF for months, plus you've been more or less stuck with your times.
Go out now and buy yourself a LWFF, PDPI, CH Pedals (about 180.00
altogether if you've got the cash). It has renewed my interest in GPL,
I'll never look back now.
Cheers.
Mauricio.
(My posts have to be longest in this newsgroup, I'll be concise next

Thanks again Larry
