Fixes some gaping security holes....and no doubt creates more.

Does it turn on this firewall by default.  If so, where are the settings
located?

In case someone are having trouble finding it:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/winxps...

It's only the full package, but no MSDN membership required.
Downloaded surprisingly fast. (30 minutes)

Go into Network Connections. Find the connection that is your internet
connection (usually a network connection to a broadband modem or router).
Right Click on that connection, click Properties at the bottom of the menu
that pops up. IIRC, the Firewall settings are found under the Advanced Tab
once the Properties app comes up and ONLY applies to that connection. If you
have several "connections" that you need firewalled, you have to go check
each one, including dialup modem based connections.

A much simpler method is to make a shortcut to your network connection
(you can use this to enable/disable the network too), have it put an
icon in the system tray too, the option is there somewhere. Now all
you do is right click the network icon in the system tray and select
"Change Windows Firewall Settings". You do the same to disable your
network too. I put the shortcut in my quicklaunch bar and when I
single click it it enables the network. This makes it much quicker
than having to navigate to Network Connections and selecting
properties, just takes a minute or so to do the initial setup to the
method I described above.

Good advice, though I don't need access to my network connections so often
that I need shortcuts to them. I usually set them up and leave them be until
an upgrade or new computer comes along.
