No backstretch grandstand until 2 or 3 years ago. About the same time
they lighted it. There's a really nice area behind the backstretch
now which used to be a wasteland. Too bad you weren't home at noon
EST today. Speedvision showed the 1960 race at Dayona on their
"Victory Circle" series.

Shame you can't snag it off satellite. Great channel.
The area behind the back straight at Daytona abuts against the
property of the Daytona municipal airport. The area was undeveloped
until about five or less years ago. In the show I mentioned (1960),
it really was an undeveloped wasteland with construction debris, an
old semi-truck trailer or two, mounds of dirt, scrub brush, etc.
There were never any backstretch bleachers or grandstands until a
couple years ago when the backstretch area was finally developed.
Now, there's a tremendous stretch of grandstands behind which is
called something like "Superstretch Village", with small carnival
rides, food vendors, and a larged paved area for showing cars,
swap-meet vendor booths or whatever.
My wife and I visited the new area one evening during the November
"Turkey Run" where hot-rodders from all over the southeast congregate
(and have for the last quarter century) in the Daytona infield. You
cannot imagine just how many custom cars and hot rods can fit in
there! There were thousands! Highly recommended...
Personally, we love going there to race more than anything. 140 MPH
on the highbanks in a 1st generation Mazda RX-7 is a HOOT! <g>
Hope this helps.
